By gum that's nice! That is a magnificent, antique-looking padlock. I'll bet there is a market for those.

Thanks guys, not bad for a first attempt i reckon
The difficulty equals how sophisticated ya want to make the mechanism.

I've long wanted to build a big rustic old style lock and have searched books and online for pictures of authentic old locks .While I have come up empty handed and ignorant of historically correct mechanisms ,you went to work and just built a real clever one..Well done.....Looks right too....You have impressed me again..
Thanks guys.
My biggest mistake was getting the key hole off center and it didn`t need to be.

Now -- to continue the progression of the trade -- next you need to make a FlintLock.
I think you already made a Matchlock, do I remember right?!?!
Anyway, as a 3rd-generation locksmith (family business started in 1899), I recall being trained on the early mortise locks and padlocks and seeing how the "lock" mechanisms of guns and well, "locks", were all very similar. Seems the earliest gunsmiths were also locksmiths, who jumped into the new trade... "Lock, Stock and Barrel".
I don`t like flinch locks, i have made a matchlock, side lock and under hammer and breech loader though.
I agree the early gun smiths and lock smith were cut from the same cloth.

Bill in Oregon wrote:Pitchy: Awesome project for certain. Really like the use of the copper rivets. That thing would be extra purty if heat blued.
I agree that would look good but there`s a lot of metal to heat up before it will change color.
Don`t know if my small propane torch would get hot enough.

I love that lock. I could use one like that to keep the local ijits out of my garage.
Now, here's what to do. Make a home made strong box like Hayseed suggested. Put something interesting in the box and then lock it. Put it out in the woods for the winter and then come next spring put it on eBay. Just say you found an old box with something in it and the morons that live on eBay will go nuts for it.
Then take the money and laugh all the way to the bank .......
