New Here, Hello Everyone!
Hello, I am the new guy. Found out about this forum accidentally when I was googling long range 30-30 shots. I just got back in the military in the Air Force Reserves, after taking almost a 6 year hiatus from active duty. I only have one lever gun currently, it's a post-64 top eject Winchester 30-30, with a side mounted scope (because I can't see to use the irons effectively anymore). It was the first Christmas present my then future wife gave me. Here is a picture or two.

Nice rifle. Welcome to the fire, pull up a stump and have fun. I have learned a whole lot around here in the time I have been here. There are folks who know more than I ever will about firearms, and there are folks who know less, and everything in between. I have also seen that we have people on here who know about things other than firearms. Hope you have fun.

Re: New Here, Hello Everyone!
Thanks for the warm welcome. The ejection works like it was designed to after I rotated the scope 90 deg counterclockwise. The windage knob was preventing the round from ejecting. Now the windage is elevation and the elevation is windage. Here is a picture looking down into the receiver with the scope on. As you can see it's tight, but there is just enough room for the shell to eject without hitting the scope.

So how is it zeroed? Does it shoot right a little all the time?
Thanks.

Re: New Here, Hello Everyone!
I installed the scope last week. I haven't been out to the range to zero it yet. I will be "zeroing" it at 200 yards with the Hornady Lever Evolution ammo, shooting right and down about 1.5", which I believe is the distance from the center of the barrel to the center of the crosshairs (I will get an accurate measure before I go). If you were truly zero it at 200 yards, your line of sight and the bullet would make an "X" and could make shots tougher. I would rather consciously know that i need to aim 1.5" high and to the left to hit a bullseye--at 200 yards. I might be too optimistic, but I hope to be able to use that setup and ammo to hit targets out to 400 yards consistently. I also read the article about accurizing lever guns, and I am quite excited about applying that to this rifle.Nath wrote:

This is a great place to hang out and a huge source of info. And yes, pictures are a must so you have made a good start.

Nice and shiny. I always wanted one in stainless.
Let us know how that AF Reserve thing works out. I did that same. Actually the chronology was Active, inactive reserves, active reserves, nat'l guard, active reserve, activation for contingency, active reserve, then we're converting to a new airframe (again!) and I don't want to play anymore.

and Welcome to THE Forum! Nice pics. Is that just a "no finish" or a special finish as it appears all "bright" metal.

Re: New Here, Hello Everyone!
It is a no finish, polished barrel. I put several coats of mothers mag polish on it, and it's holding up really well so far. It was sort of an experiment. It needed to be re-finished because of some rust that started, so I stripped it, decided I would try to polish the barrel and mag tube and see what it looked like. If it won't hold up to the elements, I will re-blue it or duracoat it or something. This is a work gun.Griff wrote: and Welcome to THE Forum! Nice pics. Welcome to the Forum I also want to thank you for your service. I am interested to see how you make out with the side scope mount I have a 32 spcl and my eyes don't see like they once did. Love the 94 Win though feels like a deer rifle and mine shoots way better than it should.

BH, welcome to the forum and thanks for your service. I often wonder about the story behind how various members chose their screen names. However, I will consider my life a success if I never hear how you chose yours.

Re: New Here, Hello Everyone!
bob, I don't live in a great place at the moment (moving next month) house has been broken into twice, another attempt while we were home one night, and found a fourth "scouting" the premisis when we came home one time. Bedroom Howitzer is what my wife started calling our 12 gauge shotgun since it has seen more use in a defense application than hunting, and I liked it. Haven't had to fire it that way yet though, thankfully.soon 2 retire wrote:BH...I often wonder about the story behind how various members chose their screen names. Just a warning: This gang here is the biggest bunch of firearms purchase enablers on the Internet. They will soon have you drooling for at least a dozen new guns that you know in your heart YOU HAVE TO HAVE, so put your credit cards in the hands of a trusted friend. Don't ask me how I know!

Welcome to a great place of knowledge. I have learned more stumbling around this place than anywhere else I can remember. Deer season starts tomorrow in Alabama, are you heading to the woods to try out that intriguing rifle you have? I leave for camp in a couple of hours and woe be unto any hog that wanders near my deer stand!

Welcome to the board; with best bunch of enablers around. Really like you M94 polished steel look. How long has the wax kept it clean? 3leg
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres
