Saw one TV program on the raising and then the scoring of this super large pumpkins. It seems to be almost a full time job to do it right and then it can still fail. They are tended to most of the growing cycle and have to be turned and moved, measurements are taking quite ofte nearthe end of the growth cycle, mainly by a tape measure. They become quite fragile and have to be carefully lifted and moved with great care. A number of entrants in the film had what they thought were winners, until the judges started examining them. The failure was a break in the shell, often hidden or caused by movement, they tend to collapse from their own weight. Also will the shell can turn mushy if not properly handled. They are not edible, the big selling point is the seeds they produce, bring some important money. Every grower has his secret formulas as well for feeding them and so on. Interesting in a different way.
