What's your 9mm carry ammo
For everyday carry mine is Hornady 115 FTX for the first 3 then 124gr FMJ+P for the rest. With the thinking that after the first 3 shots if the goblin is still breathing then its looking for cover and the fmj have the better penetration.
For woods carry its all 124 FMJ+P.
For woods carry its all 124 FMJ+P.

Re: What's your 9mm carry ammo
I have 2 different 9mm carry guns. The S&W 669 right next to me now has 115gr Federal Hi Shock HPs. It shoots most anything well with never a problem. The Hi-Power that gets some carry duty has Win. black HPs. Cannot remember the name, too sorry to go down stairs and look. Hi-Power shoots anything well and without problems. I bought both used, and each under $300.
Tho I do usually carry my SP101 .357 or S&W M37 .38+P. Sometimes a Colt Commander with Rem. 230 HPs.
BTW, a late welcome aboard to Lassiter!

Federal 9BPLE
Good track record, I've shot it at bone and it penetrates well. comes apart in water and sometimes in gel. Runs to max SAAMI specs so only for use in strong guns.

I use the 124 gr. Golden Sabers in my High Power. BUT, truth be told, I carry a .45...

Re: What's your 9mm carry ammo
Winchester 147 gr JHP Personal Protection ammo. I did a test of several ammo types and settled on this. The Win penetrated, expanded and held together best in my phone book test.
Edit to add URL to a picture of my test. The Rem 115 JHP was the biggest disappointment. The Hornady ammo core separated from the jacket. The Golden Saber was better but the Win PP doubled diameter. The cheap Win 115gr FMJ is accurate in my Ruger P95DC and is my 100 yard plinking ammo.

Re: What's your 9mm carry ammo
i'd use what NYPD uses... 124gr Gold Dot +P or 115 Gold Dot +P+... :)
Re: What's your 9mm carry ammo
Federal Hydra Shocks (spelling?)
Re: What's your 9mm carry ammo
All my handguns are sort of the same. JHPs for social work, and solids or FMJ for woods carry.

When I carried a 9 it was full of Cor-bon 115 Grain +P. I killed quite a few hogs in traps and finishing wounded ones with My PK-89 and the most impressive penitration and wound channels where from the Cor-bon.
Re: What's your 9mm carry ammo
Mine is a .45 too

And here's why... Small Kahr -- with a BIG hole.

Federal Hydroshock and Speer Gold Dot. Both are very accurate in my G19&26.

When I'm not carrying a 1911 .45 I carry Federal 115 grain +P+ in my Kahr K9 and in my Browning High Power I carry 124 grain + P Winchester PDX.
Re: What's your 9mm carry ammo
Look up research done by Dr. Gary K. Roberts.
He's the guy the Pentagon, FBI, and everyone else ask about ballistics and performance.
Speer 124 grain +P Gold Dot and the Federal HST loads are the current best of the crowd. Many other loads do pretty well, but those have the best expansion and penetration.
As to the guy loading three JHP and then ball.......
Ball will never expand. JHPs can occasionally fail to expand and punch through. If you even hit the guy with the first three rounds, having 10 more FMJ's behind them isn't going to help.
Rethink your ammo choices there.....

From what (as of today)the Critical Duty Ammo developed specically for (FBI requirements)is the ONLY one to meet ALL their requiremnents?????? Was his conclusions based (prior to the Critical Duty line)?
Now the FMJ thing(ain't getting it)if the first three JHP's fail(don't penetrate enough to stopping someone)how is (10)FMJ's not going to help.(a FMJ through the head/spine/etc.let alone 9 more coming)-----its gotta help!
Personally, I want a few FMJ's in there.(I know they are going through where I put em)
Same as with my AR15 (for home defense against the bad 2 legged types) their staggered in two's 53gr Superformance Varmint/62 gr FMJ (10 of each) of course in a preban mag.
For those that have never seen what these 53gr Superformance (almost 3500fps)does to a 50-60lb coyote at 100yds(the other side what's coming out)ya need to! (ya aint fixing that)
Even get shot in the upper thigh(probably aint fixing that)unless its right at the emergency room.(with surgeons at the ready)

I don't want it to expand hence the ball ammo.As to the guy loading three JHP and then ball.......

Re: What's your 9mm carry ammo
A round can hit someone in the heart and fully penetrate through, yet enough oxygen remains to keep someone in the fight for up to a minute.
This happened in the 1986 Miami shootout. Platt IIRC took a Silvertip to the heart and stayed alive long enough to shoot two more agents.
FMJs will punch a hole right through, which can lead to friendlies being hit (the ONLY reason the NYPD ever switched....they're not too bright). A JHP that fails to expand, which is rare these days except with heavy clothing, will turn into an FMJ and penetrate quite well. A JHP will dump energy into the target, expand and give a better probability of hitting something vital that stops the fight. Heart, lungs, spine, etc.
If the JHP doesn't expand, well, it can happen. But otherwise, I want big wound tracks, lots of blood loss and lots of stuff in the way getting hit by a large slug (a 9mm expanded is usually around .50-.52).
Not sure what he's said on the Critical loads, the last update i've read from him was last year.
