I was planning on buying a BP shotgun and then this showed up on track a First model Bess light infantry carbine. It should go well with my US Cavaley carbine I just purchased from them.

that's a shotgun , sort of.
.75 cal is right around 12 gauge. might have to adjust your wadding a might.
careful what you wish for, you might just get it.

IIRC that was standard issue for Roger's Rangers.
Nice looking piece, a lot more versatile than most people think.

So...
What feature or set of features makes this particular arm a carbine?
Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.
History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Barrel is 35inches in length but in an era that the standard arms barrel was 46inches a barrel of 35 was considered a carbine. Also it is fitted with a bar and ring for use while on horseback.Hard to compare what makes a carbine today and what made one back in the 1750s

I'm not too familiar with these - does that have a rear sight?

I understand the historical context issue.
I was just curious about the features that define the term.
Thanks!

No rear sight, it's a ,75 cal smooth bore musket. But like shooting slugs from a shotgun they can be pretty accurate.

I forgot to add that the forestock runs right up to the muzzle so it s not cut back for and no provision made for a bayonette which is true for cavalry arms.
