Y2K makes "Life" (Boy Scout)!!!

Post by Ysabel Kid »

Y2K had his Board of Review yesterday and earned his promotion to the rank of "Life" scout in the Boy Scouts of America! :D :D :D He now has one more rank to earn - the big one - "Eagle". I have no doubts that he will do so, and he has many years to do it, since he is only 14 (a boy must earn this by his 18th birthday).

He actually came back last Saturday from a week-long Boy Scout summer camp at Camp Grimes in Nebo, NC. Typical of camping with our troop, it rained. A lot. Pretty much every day. Our boys going camping is better than cloud-seeding or an indian rain dance - combined. Never fails!

What also never fails is that each year one of our scouts gets hurt. Well, this year it was Y2K! I get an urgent text from my wife Monday night (7/9) just stating "call me immediately". I was out of town with customers at a dinner. Called and found out that Y2K was using another scout's pocket knife to try to get his pocket knife "un-jammed" (the knife's lock was stuck and he couldn't close it), and the other scout's knife's lock failed. Y2K knows better, but now he'll never forget. 6 hours - and 6 stitches later, he'll now have an interesting scar to talk about.

Image

Fortunately he's okay with no nerve damage. He made it though the rest of the week, earning 5 merit badges and one partial (couldn't catch a fish while fly-fishing, but no one could - too hot). He also had his ScoutMaster conference leading up to last night's Board of Review. His peers are teasing him relentlessly - which he is taking in stride (after all, he rarely goes to a Troop meeting with less than 1/2 a dozen knives on him). I'm just glad he is okay - and of course, as always, I am proud as a peacock!!! :D :D :D

Jay,
If you want to take da kid fly fishing take a trip to Helen, Ga and book a "Giligan" with Unicoi Outfitters. That is a 3 hour trip with a guide. The folks there are great!
Congratulations on the merit badges.

... and the scar.

You're making me feel old, describing his achievements and growing up; seems like when we first met on this forum (wasn't that a few weeks ago...?) he was just a 'little kid'.

I'd just managed to convince myself that my son was just somehow getting taller but not older.

Meh. That's not a scar, that's a Right of Passage.

Got one of them myself at about the same age trying to dig an old rubber "foot" out of my favorite pole vault pole. Lock failed on my knife (at school :o ) and the blade folded up on my trigger finger  . Right to the bone on the first knuckle. Scar is still there 30 years later...

Only serious wounds cause actual 'learning'...

... and chicks dig scars, so it's kind of a win-win in spite of the minor inconvenience of blood-loss, pain, etc.

I remember when I earned the Life Scout rank. Very proud moment for any young man who puts in the work to get there.

Same here. You learn best when you actually screw up.

You guys should learn to sew wounds up yourself and save the charges for what should be a relatively cheap (because it is relatively easy) procedure...

Congrats to him on the "Life" rating. And as to the cut and required stitches, that's just part of growing up. Heck, if one of us in the neighborhood didn't have a cast or at least stitches at any given time, something was wrong. As long as the bone wasn't sticking out, or blood wasn't spurting out, it was no big deal.

It doesn't surprise me when some of today's parents over react to a bit of blood, considering how they freak out if their kid gets dirty, and heaven forbid they touch a shopping cart handle (or anything else for that matter) before mom wipes it with a sanitary wipe. Shoot for little cuts we'd just suck on it til it quit bleeding and go about our business.

I was the same way growing up. Plenty of scars to prove it, though the big ones (with surgeries) came later in life. Just adds character! :D
