Bowling Balls Anyone ?

Post by 6pt-sika »

We went to the range this morning early with the express intrest of trying penetration tests on 12-14 pound bowling balls .

The first rifle we tried was a CZ550 in 505 Gibbs shooting a Barnes 525 grain TSX bullet with 130 grains RL-22 . At 50 yards the bullet drilled a nice hole straight thru with a nice crater on the entrance side .

Next came a CZ550 in 416 Rigby shooting the Nosler 400 grain Partition and 102 grains of RL-22 . This one made a nice crater on the front side but DID NOT make it all the way thru . I was a bit surprised to say the least !

Next I tried my circa 2001 ballard rifled Marlin 444 shooting my Mountain Molds 433-400GC bullet pushed with 43 grains of Varget . It didn't go all the way thru but it did blow the front half clear off that ball !

I followed that up using the same rifle with the LBT 433-400GC that actually weighs about 420 grains and again pushed with 43 grains of Varget . That one literally DESTROYED a 12 pound ball . There were four large pieces and a multitude of smaller shrapnel sized pieces .

Now , what does all this tell us ?

1. All big guns can be destructive .

2. Partition bullets (although I like them) cannot go thru everything .

3. The 400+ grain cast bullets in the 444 are slightly similar to bombs when they hit a bowling ball .

The moral of the story !

If it isn't harmfull to anyone and you like it , then do it

I got to try that. Bowling balls....I'm thinkin'.......are about the only thing I have never shot. I bet it would be neat to roll 'em down a hill and let loose with a 30 rounder out of any semi-auto.-------Sixgun

The guy that gave them to us claims you never find any that a man would more likely use . All of them are under 14 pounds , and all the ones we shot had quite small finger holes .

That kinda leads me to be lieve the majority are womens . Also kinda makes me think they bought them to go bowling with the hubby or boyfriend then they either split or lost intrest and they later donated them to GoodWill .

We have a couple more I am told so next week perhaps I'll be able to slay one with my 45-70 shooting the BallistiCast 462-550GC bullet !

Sounds like too much fun.

Did you pick up your dead targets?

:?: :)
Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

I kinda remember in the mid 70's there was a article in G&A or shooting time where a guy was cutting off pieces of bowling balls and makeing sixgun grips of them, many differant swirls and colors. I've been thinking of trying it.
