Had a pretty good day at the range

Post by FWiedner »

Just testing some ammo.

I think I'm close to settling on a new hunting load for my .356 Win.

Speer 220gr FNSP over 47.1gr Win748, CCI-200, Win Brass = 2286fps

It's my effort at compromise. Has a trajectory like the factory 200gr and delivers more energy at 200yds than the factory 250gr. Still doesn't achieve the HITS value of the 250gr though.

3-inch Shoot-n'-C at 100yds

Made me feel like work got done.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

That'll work. I whacked a big hog a couple years ago with that exact combination. When the bullet struck, it sounded like someone hit a sheet of plywood with a hammer! Made a big thwack and put him down right now! I dont shoot that load around here at whitetails, I use the Speer 180 at 2600 fps and it shoots even better than the 220 load.

HITS is the 'Hornady Index of Terminal Standards."

It's kind of like the Taylor Knock Out value, but not the same. Hornady states HITS is intended to "... help hunters choose effective bullet/cartridge combinations for any hunting situation in the world."

I too, am more interested in where that 1st shot out of a cold barrel will go. But, repeatability of that 1st shot is also important!
