Twisting the knife on my landlocked brethren
May and June bring halibut off the coast of Oregon. Salmon, too, but I haven't tried for them yet!
First trip, 49"
Second trip, 48"
This past Saturday, 51"
The 51" next to a 46"
I didn't take a pic of the 20 crab we hauled in Saturday, but suffice it to say that crab cakes and fresh baked halibut featured heavily in the menu prep this week!
Life is good!

I love salmon but I'd go fishing just for the halibut.

halibut is the best eats.
Re: Twisting the knife on my landlocked brethren
Congrats! Halibut is my favorite fish, my hunting buddy pulled in a hundred pounder last week off the coast of BC and there is a big steak waiting for me. Good eats.

The Left Coast is hardly flat. I'm 30 minutes from Puget Sound, 30 min. from the Cascade Range, 2 hours from Pacific Ocean, and dozens of cold rivers for trout, salmon, steelhead. Elk, deer, cats, bear all over....nah, you can have Colorado (though, I loved my scoot ride cross state on the 50 a few years ago)COSteve wrote:Oh, we'll survive just fine without the ocean nearby. Re: Twisting the knife on my landlocked brethren
Oh, you must have webbed feet then if you're up in the Northwest. Spent some time at Ft. Lewis and then Madigan Hospital back in the 60's there and I remember while I was recovering in the hospital I marked the calendar every day it rained or drizzled (which it did the most). My calendar had a stretch of 164 days in a row with rain! Beautiful country but just too many clouds and rain for my taste. I found out that I craved the sunlight and blue skies and realized that the Northwest wasn't for me. However, I'm glad you like up there.BlaineG wrote:The Left Coast is hardly flat. Great job on the halibut and crabs. Nice useful fishing boat too. Blessings

It doesn't rain anymore here than other places....About 37 inches a year. Maybe a total of 1 foot of snow...You guys are too cold, and too snowy for me. I love it here.COSteve wrote:Oh, you must have webbed feet then if you're up in the Northwest. Spent some time at Ft. I like Halibut. Good eating for sure. I'm envious.

what caliber do you recommend for a Halibut....45/70...or something smaller like a 38/55... :)

I shot a number of big ones with a .357, but a .22 works about as well, and I can use it on salmon too.336bl wrote:what caliber do you recommend for a Halibut....45/70...or something smaller like a 38/55...

Re: Twisting the knife on my landlocked brethren
FYI I tossed 3 pots out on July 3rd, went back the next day with my brother and nephew to pull them.
Caught 28 BIG ocean Dungies, the kind you don't need to measure.
Steamed crab that night and next, crab cakes the third night.
Cold pinot gris (or cheap beer, whatever ya got, really) goes nicely with fresh crab!

Hey, the NW isn't that rainy. We have 60 sunny days a year in W WA. Why just last Sunday we almost made it to 80. The next State south was close to 90. Anytime we want sunny weather we can drive an hour or so east and be in desert.
We even have seasons here: Winter and August.

Re: Twisting the knife on my landlocked brethren
Gotta remember, CO is mostly attitude, they tend to forget the highest mountain in the contiguous 48 is Mt. Whitney in CA. And it takes the whole passel of them to be impressive. As most of 'em ain't very outstanding on their own, few tower much over 2,500 ft above the surrounding area. Whereas, CA's Mt. Whitney rises >10,000 ft by its lonesome. AND, WA's Mt. Rainier has 13,210 of its 14m417 feet punching a solo hole in the sky!
'Sides ain't just about ½ of CO flatter than a griddle?
Steve, just be fair... if you'd of said "low lifes", I'd have to agree... even us in Texas fit that description!

Does it taste as good as Redear or Warmouth? Bluegill and its cousins are the best tasting of anything I have ever eaten. I like Salmon, but Bluegill beats it, and so does Walleye.

I agreed, until I had peacock bass..... Here in PNW, cod, rockfish, lingcod, skate wings, Hood Canal shrimps, halibut, and wild coldwater trout are my favorites...in no particular order...and, smoked is best IMO.piller wrote:Does it taste as good as Redear or Warmouth? UPDATE
I pursued the wily albacore tuna last weekend and plugged the boat!
I used fairly light salmon gear, which was ALMOST too light for these pelagic rockets!
Fresh sashimi Sunday and oh, did I mention the 3 limits of crab?
Life is good!
