Rossi/Puma 92 in 44mag
Does anyone know if they ever fixed the problem with oversized bores on the 44mags?
After the first one I purchased came with a .432" bore, I've been kind of hesitant about buying another. That was several years ago when it was just a toss of the dice, though
Hopefully they've gotten a bit better since.

Yep, I purchased LSI Puma about 7 years ago. Slugged the barrel and it came out .432", which isn't a problem 'cause I cast my own bullets. But before I got a mold that would cast a bullet that would feed in my Puma, I bought bullets from Beartooth bullets (.432" 250 gr. WFN PB) http://www.beartoothbullets.com/. Ranch Dog's 265 gr, FRN GC dip lubed w/alox or 45-45-10 is an excellent bullet that casts to about .433"-.434" and sized to .432" when gas check is applied. Haven't tried RD's bullet unsized, yet. These shoot well in my Puma as well as some Lee 240 T/L bullets unsized (.433") and lubed with Recluse's 45-45-10 and loaded in Special cases. http://www.ranchdogoutdoors.com/
I don't know if the oversize bore has been corrected by the new mfg. but I'm sure Nate can/will let us know...

+1 Nate will chime in but yes, IIRC, they fixed it some time ago. A call to M&M Gunsmithing ( www.mmgunsmithing.com ) will tell you also. They have been the Rossi warranty shop going way back (don't know about now, but they'd certainly know).

Thanks for the replies.
If anyone else has a recent production (last couple of years) what is your bore/accuracy like?

Glad you replied Nate.
I just found a post somewhere ,through google ( on Sixshooters I think), that mentioned you had some contact with them about the barrels bore size and possibly other issues.
Glad you could help them straighten it out.
Have you heard or noticed anything about the feeding/function that might be a problem (seating depth/longer bullets) that we should be aware of?

My Rossi 92/44 will cycle and function with 240 gr. SWC's at a length of 1.620". I understand some might have an issue with the SWC's and the length I use.

Re: Rossi/Puma 92 in 44mag
The first thing to keep in mind is all leverguns are ammo length and bullet shape sensitive. You don't think about it much if you are dealing with a rifle cal that is a bottleneck caliber. Bottlenecks always feed better than straightwall ammo, whether is a rifle cal or a pistol cal. that's because you have a small diameter bullet going into a really big hole by comparison, the bottleneck chamber being much like a funnel.meanc wrote:Glad you replied Nate.

The problems shows up the most with these short straightwall pistol cals. and it's even more common with cals like 38/357m and 44spec/44mag because of the diverse secltion of ammos to chose from. Just keep in mind these pistol cal rifles are a lot like semi-auto pistols. There's just some ammo it's not going to work with.
The original 92's were designed to work with bottleneck ammo in the 1.5" to 1.6" OAL. Depending on the bullet shape it may work with longer ammo and even shorter if you don't try to run it fast.
An FYI, there are commercial reloaders that have offered CAS ammo and have offered 1 1/5" long loaded Cowboy leveraction 38's.
For years I directed my rifle customer to "T" ammo for his 1.5" cowboy 38's. But, Roy retired so I was recommending Ammo Direct.
Well, they are out of business at least temporarily. (had a fire I believe)
Here is the new source.
highcountryammunition.com
They are the manufacturer but, the Cowboy ready ammo isn’t listed on the site, yet. You will need to contact Wolf Wind-walker email is Sttarrwolf@aol.com Ph# is 435-669-3221
Another thing to keep in mind, because of manufacturing variances (parts stackup) no two guns are ever the same when it comes to what they will feed. Some will feed everything, some are picky.

Re: Rossi/Puma 92 in 44mag
Thanks for that very in depth bit of info.
If I get one in 44mag more than likely it'll be for putting 240gr-300gr down the tube.
Those lengths are typically longer than the 1.6" OAL you stated.
Have you heard of anyone having problems with the 44mag specifically concerning shooting the 250 - 300gr ?

Re: Rossi/Puma 92 in 44mag
I have a R92 Scout Rifle, it is actually a 2011 LSI Puma of Braztech import and has a measured .428" groove and.430" bore. I shoot my TLC432-240-RF, TLC432-265-RF, and TLC432-300-RF out of it, all at 1.60" OAL. It seems to like them all! I have a NcStar 2.75X22 Scout Scope on the rifle which is a Chinese copy of the Burris 2.75X22. I changed the parallax from 50 to 100 yards to help the distant shooting and it is a great combo for hunting. So far the hogs are not digging the rifle!
I also have a 2011 Braztech rifle of the same configuration but chambered in 45 Colt. It too is a great hunting rifle.
