Henry 45-70

Post by sullkat »

I sent an email to Henry asking why no loading gate on the 45/70 and this is the answer.

Thank you for owning a Henry Big Boy. All Henrys will always be tube fed as the original Henry design was tube feed. The loading gate is more difficult to load than dropping rounds down a tube.

So it is not on my list to have.

I think it boils down to one of two things strength of the receiver or the added labor cost.
But I believe it will cost them in sales, not many true lever-lovers want the tube fed.
I will either go Rossi or wait for remlin to get it together.

And by the way that 45-70 looks just like an original Henry??

If you are looking for a Stainless 45/70 the local shop here in Torrington has (had?) a pretty decent NOS M1895GS on the rack. IIRC it's at $600 but that could be negotiable.

Give JJ at Ammo Shack a call. (307) 534-2030

Howdy

I have heard that strength of the frame idea before. The Winchester Model 1886 was the first lever gun chambered for 45-70 and it had a loading gate, just like the Models 1866, 1873, and 1876 did. So did the Marlins that were chambered for 45-70. If they don't want to put a loading gate on their rifles it is purely a monetary decision. It is cheaper to make a rifle without a loading gate.
I don't know where we're going but there's no sense being late.

One of many reasons I purchased a Browning 1886 (1986).

The 1881 Marlin in .45-70 Govt. preceded the 1886 Winchester...
