Favorite Rifle and handgun to shoot

Post by hondo1892 »

It's been awhile since I've posted been kinda busy with work. I stop in and read but don't post much lately. What is your favorite rifle and handgun to take out and shoot? I kinda have a three way tie with my refles. I have a .40 flintlock I love shooting but then there is my 1876 Uberti and japchester .44 mag 1892. All are a pleasure to shoot. My favorite is a 1851 navy repro very fun and accurate. Here's a photo of my flinter and 1851 navy.

I like all of them, except for my little Llama subcompact since it isn't reliable.

That's a tough one. I love all my guns, or I wouldn't keep them  I guess the two I shoot the most besides my .22's are my Marlin 1895G 45/70 and my 3 1/2" Ruger Old Model Vaquero in .45 Colt. I shoot the 22's most often for economical reasons, besides the fact that they are enjoyable.

Depends upon the day it is and what I have in my hands. I'm usually pretty happy pulling the trigger on whatever I'm holding. My collection is on the small side compared to many so it contains only arms I enjoy shooting. Currently, I've been shooting both my Rossi leverguns (I almost always take them) as well as my new M1A and new M1 Carbine. My 22lrs, both pistol and rifles, have been left home most often lately.

Marlin 39 and Ruger 22/45 22s. I don't think a I can have more fun shooting than with a 22.
Kind regards,

.32 Mag SS Vaqueritos and, historically, GI M1 Carbine. Like COSteve, the latter doesn't get out as much any more, so I'd say toss up between .357 and .44 Mag Rossi 92s with mid-level loads. Uh, did I mention the .44 Sp New Vaqs?...

+1! I laid off my 22 pistols for several months and then took them to the range one day (Ruger SS and Buckmark Camper) . I had almost forgotten how much fun they are.
Since I got the 6.5 Mauser I have been shooting it a lot as well. It's such a charmer!! Must be a lady!

Favorite rifle to shoot is a Marlin 1894C in .357 Mag. Favorite handgun is a Springfield GI Model 1911A1.

The Single Six and any of several .22 long guns...If I wanted hit something small at 100 yards with a handgun, I'd pick my Ruger MKII Gubment Target, but I can scare 'em pretty good most of the time with the SingleSix :P

For many years after I finished it, it was my Winchester 94 Custom in .30-30:

And then I bought a Trapper made from a 1967 Canadian Centennial:

But, for the sheer thrill of shooting, the guns I enjoy the most are my CAS guns:

My tastes run so different, the best I can do is by category:

Handguns:
Autoloader: Kimber - Gold Cup - 45 ACP
Revolver: S&W - M57 - 41 mag.

Rifles:
Lever: Winchester - M1892 - 45 Colt
Bolt: Winchester - M70 Safari Grade - 375 H&H

Shotguns:
Trap: Krieghoff - K80 - 12 ga. trap
Sp. Clays: Beretta - 682G - 12 ga. 3"

Looking over the list shows a distinct lack of small bores. Rimfire 22's don't count, they belong in their own category.
Handgun: Ruger - Mk.II - 22 LR
Rifle: Anschutz - M54 - 22 LR

Favorites to date.

I like to shoot all my firearms, but the two I shoot everyday are my Henry large loop lever carbine and my USFA 12-22 revolver both in .22lr. God Bless.

OP said rifle and handgun so I will stick to those:

.54 flintlock custom made by Brad Emig, cabin creek outfitters. No other firearm comes close.

If that one didn't exist, my 54 cal shilo sharps military rifle, 1863 would be the choice

Handguns: NAA ranger in 22 mag. I almost always carry this firearm. It has more me time than any other firearm. Probably the last hand gun I would get rid of. 1 of 400 ever made. This is the one I would keep.

S&W 442 38 special. Fully reliable. Nearly always in my daily carry backpack. But it's generic and I have no attachment to it.

Sig220 elite black in 45acp. May be the one I grab when ballon goes up. Last few weeks it has been in my backpack Again generic, no emotional attachment.

Gary Reeder custom ruger in 44 mag. My favorite woods walking during hunting seasons hand gun. Next to last hangun I would get used. this custom handgun would be hard to reproduce, certainly would be a long wait.

Ya know, I'm kinda sad. All the long guns and most of the handguns that I currently own were not purchased or built with the idea of fun in mind. I purpose built a 10/22 for hunting. It's short, light and looks nice. Does it bring a big smile to my face when I shoot it? Not really. Same for the .243 Savage I homebrewed. Shoots straight, will put the smack down on coyotes or deer out farther than I need, is compact and handles well. Still it's just a hunting gun. I've sold off lot's of guns that were more fun but they just didn't fill a need I had and I'm paying for it now. For that reason I've thought about getting another gun. A gun with the main reason being fun. Might be an AR, might be a KelTec, might be a 10/22 M1 carbine clone build, might be a 10/22 tacticool build, heck maybe even an 10/22 Thompson clone, I haven't decided yet but by lord I'm gonna get a fun gun.

As for handguns I have one that is my fun gun. My .32 Birdshead Single Six. That gun does bring a smile to my face when I touch it off. My others........... just tools.

Now I need to find something to bring the fun back into shooting. Thinkin some sort of competition. IPDA, IPSC, tactical rifle, long range target, Ruger rimfire competitions, something. Nothing to be overly competitive in but something to give reason to send lead downrange. Recommendations welcome.

It is the .45 Minimax. It stovepipes with anything but UMC or Cor-Bon. It has 3 factory magazines, all 3 fail to feed on the first 3 shots, then straighten up until the last shot. It is aggravating. Accuracy is great. It has sights which can be seen and it hits where it is pointed. If I cound solve its problems, I would enjoy it.

I love shooting them all. But I'll just go with the ones that spend the most time out of the safe and are shot the most. A 20" and 24" Marlin Cowboys in .44 mag. A 4 3/4" Ruger flattop in .44 mag. One of the rifles and the pistol is almost always with me. When I'm out shootin' tin can and rocks, they are the ones. Heck, 75% of the time during hunting season they are on my hip and in my hand. :D

For some reason this thing is one of the most fun rifles I own to shoot:

Image

Can't explain it - it just puts a smile on my face every time.

Next would be one of my lever guns, in .357 or .45 Colt and my favorite pistol to shoot right now is a Bisley Vaquero.
