My New/Old Elk/Deer Rifle

Post by Sixgun »

Here's that 1886 I picked up a few weeks ago. Cleaned her up a bit. Its an 1886 Extra Lightweight Takedown Full Magazine, 22" Barrel with Nickel steel for the heavy loads with a correct coded Lyman M-21 "Climbin' Lyman" chambered for the 45-90 with the 1-32 twist. Preliminary tests out back with put a 400 grainer into 3" @ 100 meters. Ought to do better with the 325 grainers. Gonna test her out extensively this coming weekend.------------Sixgun

Hey Sixgun, I see no sense in taking all that time and effort, especially your precious time and effort, to work up a pet load for that '86. I'll offer my services, just send me the '86 and I'll work up the pet load. I'll let you know how we're getting along periodically and you'll know it has a loving home. What do you say?

A really nice procurement.

Thanks guys. Good thing I'm not a rich man or there would be no '86s for others to buy. Being a forklift driver leaves me dreaming a lot.

Kimwcook,

Thank you very much on your offer. I think I'll take you up on that. It only seems fair that along with the rifle, I include all of the necessary components for reloading. You know, dies, 3-500 empty cases, a couple of K of gas checked bullets, primers, and of course, some cash for your efforts. (gas ain't cheap today) Is $1000 enough?

We sure have some helpful guys here on the board! Send me your address and I'll overnight it for 'ya. No hurry in getting it back as I probably won't need it for 3 or 4 years, hopefully before I move to Siberia. (for good)

Ha! Thanx pard. There's just something about an '86 that I have never been able to find in the other models. A '95 comes close. I just wish so many years would not pass between acquisitions.

I may have to quit my truck driving and move to a forklift. I can't afford repairs AND new gun purchases!

That's a very interesting combination. Full mag, 45-90 with the 22" barrel on a TD frame. Any history to go with it?? Factory gun? Letter? Front half off of a different rifle? The 22" barrel stumps me. I know Winchester did whatever the customer wanted to pay for, but I've never seen that combo before...I would think that it was a rebuild, but gun condition indicates otherwise. Prying minds want to know...I would love to have that one.

Ed, The 86 in the pic is an extra lightweight and in that configuration it came standard with a 22" barrel in the 45-70 and 24" in the 33. Half magazines were also standard in extra lightweights. This rifle is in an uncataloged caliber as the extra lightweight was only offered in 45-70 and 33. Believe it or not, I have only seen three extra lightweights in uncatalogued calibers in my lifetime and I managed to get two of them, both in 45-90. As you know, the Madis book has this info as does the "Blue Book".

I don't have the letter yet, but I know the gun is "right". All measurements of the receiver, barrel, buttstock, forend and forend cap
are of extra lightweight configuration and the barrel has the correct 1-32 twist. Thanks for looking.----------------Sixgun
