MY Son & I Lost A Friend - Shot While Deer Hunting

Donny was only 45, married, and a local businessman (fast auto oil changes) I patronized, who attended the same HS auto classes, etc, with my son.

It appears that his party (4) was deer hunting together, and one reportedly stated that he "shot at a deer, but hit Donny". (shotgun-only)

Cells were immediately used to summon Wardens, State Police & ambulance/rescue - and Donny was removed to a local hospital, where he later passed away from his wound to the stomach area.

It's a very sad day, for all concerned, all hunters, and us personally.

My heart & prayers go out to his family.

My heart goes out to the families of both the shooter and the victim. It makes me crazy trying to understand how these "accidents" happen. It just makes no sense to me.

Yep. That's about all one can say.

I can't begin to imagine the horror of being any of the hunters in that party, or any of their family or close friends, including especially the one who pulled that trigger...

Every dangerous pursuit takes a certain amount of participants. And some get away with what is amazing. No real understanding it. Have a patient who flipped a rail at 260 and is in great shape ... after 7 surgeries. Then there is this sort of thing and my cousin Wes 50 years ago. Home from the Navy and his buddy drives him into a huge tree stump at 110. Who is to understand - I like to think it will all be solved later for those who believe - it certainly makes little sense here. Faith.

I lost a friend the same way 35 years ago. Hunting with a small group, someone tripped up crossing a fence. Sad, tragic, unavoidable, and all the other words won't bring him back. We all should learn from this and use it as a reminder. My condolences.

That type of hunting leads to that type of accident. Someone will invariably move too fast or slow and end up with someone being in someone else's field of fire. It's why I personally HATE shotgun drives and generally won't participate, especially when semi-auto slug guns are involved.

Over the years, I have know of a number of hunting deaths. Every one of them is the result of a choice or decision somebody made. The decision may not have been made by the person killed, but by someone else. We decide to be careful or careless.

I am so so sorry for this fellows family and friends.

Every accident is avoidable, but none of us are perfect so accidents are really unavoidable.

I've passed up at least a coupla good bucks & one great buck because their bodies were partially obscured by foliage & I couldn't identify the target with absolute certainty or I was uncertain of the backstop.

One memorable time I coulda chanced it and shot at the brown patch showing through the alders and perhaps dropped a B & C category buck but I didn't do it because I wasn't absolutely certain. I tried a stalk from a different angle but the buck "busted" me and the nicest deer I ever saw in my life disappeared into the brush.

But I'm still glad I didn't chance it.

You gotta be absolutely certain of your target and backstop before you squeeze that trigger.

You can't take back spoken words or fired bullets so think and know before you speak or shoot.

Somehow I bet the victim was not wearing the legally required
hunting orange. I bet we do not know the whole story.
There is NO way anyone showing orange could be mistaken
for a deer in my opinion.
