Win 94 question

Post by flatfender »

I have a project going, almost thru, but I hit a snag last nite. I bought a win 94 bicentenial that had been new and left in a closet in the box and got wet and stayed wet for some time. The but stock was trash and there was corrosion all down one side. I bought it for cheap and decided to make it a 38-55 with the 26 in octagon barrel. I'm almost a year into this and almost thru when I decide to try to cycle a cartridge from the magazine to the chamber. When you open the lever the round comes up but wen I start forward it falls back down. My other 94s have some spring tension to keep the carrier up, but not this one. As far as I can tell this thing has not had anyone messing with it other than me and I have not been fooling with the internals of the reciever. So I am guessing there must be a part missing -carrier spring- or? Anyone have any thoughts?

Yes, it definitely sounds as though the carrier spring has rusted, broke, or somehow lost the tension to lift the carrier with a round on it. You can access the screw that holds it in place thru the loading port. However, you have to remove the gate to get to it.

Thanks Griff, I'll put it back together tonite or tomorrow, and post some pictures of b/4 and after. By the way that forend from numerick you suggested did fit but turned out to be the most work of the whole project. When they list it as semi fit and finish they weren't kidding.

flatfender,

Griff is right on. Carrier spring problems.
Do yourself a favor and just replace it. If that rifle is as messed up as it sounds you should do a complete strip down and thorough cleaning anyway. Also check the carrier. Make sure it's not damaged where the spring contacts it.

The problem was the carrier spring allright, thanks guys. The carrier spring and screw are both missing. Now all I have to do is find some place that has them in stock. here are a few pictures. Image

flatfender,

Call Browning / Winchester. The current or past AE models use the same carrier spring as the post-64s.

Thanks J Miller, winchester had the spring and screw. Everyone else I checked with was out. I may get to shoot this little darling in a week or so. I'm thinking I might change the buttstock to a rifle style rather than the shotgun. I think that would make it a real looker.

Very cool project.....I'm sure we all would like to hear more about it and see some more pictures. How did you refinish the receiver? Did you replace the barrel or get it rebored? Tell us about the new wood. How does it shoot?

I look forward to do something similar. I want a 38-55 carbine and a 7-30 Waters rifle.

I just have to find the right candidates for the job. The last three 30 WCF I purchased with intentions of doing this all turned out to be tack drivers.

Darn my bad luck!

I did not refinish the reciever, it is pewter plated so all the corrision was on the tang, barrel and mag tube. I killed the rust on the tang and put some silver paint on the little spot that showed, most of the rust is hidden by the buttstock. The barrel is from Numrich, the 26 in Longrange Cowboy. I found a Redfield reciever sight for it on ebay. I started the project last April and it now looks like a couple of weeks more and it will be ready to shoot.

Wm, I know what you mean about finding a suitable donor for the project. I bought 2 others that I couldn't use, 1 I gave to my son and 1 I decided I needed to keep. Both were 32 spl.
