How to set up the sights on a Marlin 1894C 38/357

Post by Crosseyed Bob »

I need some advice on setting up my Marlin 1894C. The gun has a Lyman 66LA receiver sight, and so far I’ve left the factory rear sight on. I’ve never owned a gun with a receiver sight, nor one that shot two different rounds, so I’m having a hard time deciding how best to organize things. I’ll be hunting with .357, and plinking with 38.

1) Should I set up the Lyman sight with two settings, one for .357 and the other for 38 using the point blank range for each round?
Or…
2) Should I set it up for 50 and 100 yard settings for .357, then manually adjust the sight when shooting 38?
Or…
3) Set up the Lyman for .357 point blank range, and set up the factory rear sight for 38 point blank range.
Or…
4) Any better ideas you all may have.

Maybe I’m over thinking this. :?:

I took the factory rear sight off and sighted to be just a bit, about 1" high, at 100 yards. Every gun is different but .38 Special 158 gr. RNs are on at a certain range, 148 gr. WCs on at 25 yards, and so forth. Requires some shooting to know exactly but, hey, there's always some sort of sacrifice involved in anything good.
Sincerely,

Think I am going to scope mine. :D

But I like 2" high at 50 with the 357 and then see where the 38s shoot at that range.

I put a combination ghost-ring set up on the receiver and a red-dot on a scout type mount. Not a co-witness thing, just back-up sights.

I zero both at about 75yds and I only use one .357 load.

Just makes it simple for me.

Pick it up and shoot, y'know?

Our 16" Winchester is dead on at 100 yds with 357 Mag (158 grain @1900 fps) and just an inch and a half off at 50 yards. 158 grain 38 Spl @ 1050 fps is dead on at 25 yards. This is all with one sight setting from the receiver sight. The rear sight is removed. I have a red line on the receiver sight mark where it is set. Outside of hunting season when we may small game gun or practice extensively I can either move the sight so 38's are dead on at whatever range and then move it back to the red line for 357's.

Now we're talking. That's what I was going for. Gonna go fiddle with it at the range this afternoon.
