Had to let our 14 year old Welsh Terrier "Button" go. I blubbered like a little kid.
She had internal bleeding - which is what precipitated this - but she also had congestion in her lungs and has been progressively slowing down the last months...
She was a trooper right to the end. I'm really going to to miss my little girl. What a credit to her species.
My prayers are with you. We all know how hard it is to lose such a friend and companion. I do believe we will see our beloved pets again, as per the Rainbow Bridge.

O.S.O.K...I know how heart wrenching it is to put down your "best friend." My best experience always has been to get a new puppy soon. A new puppy is not a replacement, but an entirely new relationship with a lovable puppy that is full of life and offering you to be your new "best friend" for years to come!
Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine,
and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old
are restored to health and vigor.
Those who were hurt or maimed
are made whole and strong again,
just as we remember them
in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content,
except for one small thing;
they each miss someone very special to them,
who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together,
but the day comes when one suddenly stops
and looks into the distance.
His bright eyes are intent.
His eager body quivers.
Suddenly he begins to run from the group,
flying over the green grass,
his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted,
and when you and your special friend finally meet,
you cling together in joyous reunion,
never to be parted again.
The happy kisses rain upon your face;
your hands again caress the beloved head,
and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

My depest condolences to you and your family. I had to have my 12 year old Jack Russell put to sleep in April. Like you I cried like a little kid, even thinking about it brings a tear to my eye right now.
I really like the idea of the Rainbow Bridge. As I have heard it said Heaven: All the dogs that ever loved you will be waiting at the gate.

Very sorry!
I do believe a dog has for their owner the most unconditional love of anything on this planet.
Only thing to top it is what God has for us!

Strange. I was thinking the exact same thing earlier today.
And again, thank you all for the thoughtful replies.
Tough to lose a good friend. You did the right thing by ending his suffering. May you see him again when it is your time to stand in front of the Pearly Gates and hear your name read from the book.
