Made a little something this weekend. New Pics
This weekend I was just sitting around and thought I would try my hand at wood burning. I wanted to burn the Winchester horse into my strong box on my SASS Gun Cart. I went to Home Depot and picked up a piece of practice wood. I bought a long piece so I could try more than once if need be.
Well.....I made and transferred the logo onto my board and went at it. Two things came to light.....first......that was a lot of work for a "practice" run. Second was that I liked the way it turned out so much that I didnt want to just throw it away.
I then started thinking about what I want to do with it. Thought about just cutting it nailing that to my gun cart.
Then I came up with the idea that I would write my last name using the same style as the Winchester logos. I lucked out because the letters that are in Winchester are also in my name. Winchester didnt have a "L" so I just altered one of the "E"s and went with that.
Now, I have never done anything like this and Im def not on par with some of the projects you guys come up with and do.....but.......Figured since it was dealing with Winchester that yall could appreciate it.
I guess its some kind of sign or something.....here it is.
I do wish I would have burned the horse a little darker. I thought it would darken up a little when the stain hit it.....but its a little lighter than I like. I may at some point go over it again.

Good job Rube, U can make one for Me Anytime. My name consists of a W an E an H and an R. Where did U get the Win horse pattern,I like it and agree it could have been a little darker. The name came out perfect.

I mad the pattern for the Winchester horse. Its very detailed so burning it was a slight challenge and with all the details in it I used a fine point burner tip and so it didnt burn as deep and dark as the letters.

It isn't about whether a person's particular project is better than someone else's, but it's just whether or not you're pushing outward your own horizons. Sounds like you did just that.Rube Burrows wrote:Now, I have never done anything like this and Im def not on par with some of the projects you guys come up with and do....

Rube,
That's excellent, you've given me an idea for future projects when I retire.

That did turn out very nice. I did some wood burning on a smaller scale and it was very tedious. Those big letters look like they took some time. Good work.

I always liked the Winchester rider logo and think it would make a real nice tattoo probably cost a bit though to get it done.

The letters did take a while. Even broke one burner .....it made a POOF sound like a fuse blowing. I could have just shaded them and it would have been a lot quicker but I wanted them to be textured and have more pattern to them. When you look up close its almost like a checkered grip on a rifle stock.....except no true pattern to the checkering.

Thanks. Maybe I have. I have been working with some other designs also and last night I attempted to do copy of a John Wesley Hardin tin type......but I could not get the eyes right. I'll have to practice that some more.

Nice work! Those would make great house or farm gate signs! With a good coat or two of spar varnish.... I like the Marlin horse logo.

Re: Made a little something this weekend. New Pics
Since I love old Tin Types I figured I would play around and try my hand at recreating one.
I am not happy with the way it turned out but it was a good learning experience. First thing I learned is that I need a professional machine.....(ordered)
It actually didnt look all that bad till I went a little overboard with the shading....which was brought on by the cheap machine I use. Its very hard to regulate temps so it has a tendency to spot up certain places.
It was fun to do but no where near being on par with what I like a finished product to look like.
Anyways.......bad with the good so here it is.

Re: Made a little something this weekend. New Pics
Well after a very long, frustrating, hectic, and generally crappy day at work on Monday I finally dragged my unhappy butt, home at 8:10 pm. I wasn't in a bad mood but it wasn't great either, until.......I opened the door and saw a long package from a Mr Wheeler, who we know here as Rube Burrows. MY SIGN IS HERE!! For the first time all day I had a smile on my face and I hadn't even opened it yet. When I did open it I was even more thrilled. Rube you really made a losey day into a bright one. It gets even better, my wife walked in the house about 10 pm from her 7am to 7pm shift (she was having one of those days too) on the phone and said to whoever was on the other end "well I'm gonna go now, and talk to my husband and find out where this really cool sign came from." She hung up and was amazed at the sign, I mean she really likes it Rube.
This is a public thank you for turning around the day of two people who really needed it. Love the sign and I think it's going in my gun room , she has other thoughts but we'll see! Tom
