On - T - Rossi / Interarms 44 mag- update

Post by pwl44m »

Saw one in a shop the other day. Didn't show much interest in it then but got to thinking about it. It wasn't priced but He said it would probably be around $300. It wasn't a brand new Gun but it looked really good. Cleaned up it would shine.
So is Interarms an early gun ? It just didn't look like current production. I may go back and look at it tomorrow and see what We can work out.
On another note, I told someone about it today and He said to watch out for Rossis as the recvrs tend to crack. Anybody heard of this ?

No use going back to the shop, Perry. That fellow that spun you that yarn just wanted to slow you down so he could beat you to the nice gun. :D

The guy's full of it. I've been working on the rossi's for almost 20 years now. I have yet to see one with a cracked receiver.

Here's some Rossi history. For years dating back to the 70's the Rossi 92 made in Brazil was imported by InterArms of Alexandria VA. InterArms was the first to market the Rossi made 92 as the Puma. Somewhere in the late 90's the owner of InterArms passed away. It is my understanding the heirs didn't care to continue with the operation of InterArms so the stock on hand was sold off at a reduced price. (I bought new Rossi 92's at that time for $190). About that same time period, Rossi sold off their gallery gun, the pump 62 and the revolvers to Taurus, so some folks thought there would be no more Rossi 92's available. I can't tell you how many people ask me what I was going to do now.
About the time this was all coming down, Navy Arms had started importing the Rossi 92's. Then not long after, the ex-employee's of InterArms started up Legacy Sports International (LSI) and began importing the Rossi 92 as their Puma. They were even in the same building as the old InterArms company and were using the Puma name as the model name. Then and I don't remember exactly, LSI moved to Reno NV.
During this period, late 90’s, EMF was importing the Armi San Marco Italian made 92's, (ASM's) and had contacted me to do warranty work on those for them. But ASM's QC went down so EMF ask me to help them decide how they should order some 92's from Rossi. EMF has been importing the Rossi 92's since about 2000.
About 2009 Taurus acquired Rossi and the 92's and have taken over the distribution under the Braztech name. Both EMF and lost their deal once the Taurus buyout took place. LSI now carries the Armi Sport/Chiappa 92 but it's still called the Puma Model. The Armi Sport/Chiappa 92 is a re-incarnation of the Armi San Marco guns. Chiappa is doing a much better job as far as fit and finish is concerned. But, they did bring forth some reverse engineered design flaws that plagued the ASM 92's. Since LSI started importing the Chiappa 92 I have been consulting with Chiappa to try and get the problems resolved.

The Rossi 92's are still available but will be imported by Braztech a sub of Taurus USA of Florida
Rossi/Braztech

That $300 is a fair price for the older InterArms Rossi 92. But, you should know changing out the cheap "BB" gun sights will be a problem The Dovetail cut into the barrel is roughly .400" so standard 3/8 >375 just fall through. Plus the front is intregal with the barrel band.

I do offer an upgrade built on the old parts.

Thanks for a great historical summary on the Rossi's Steve. All I know, is that I cherish my Rossi 92, especially after giving it the once over with Steve's instructions from his DVD, and replacing the horrid stock ejector spring, magazine follower and safety with parts that Steve offers on his website. Some folks sneer at the Rossi name, but I love mine, and a better more reliable gun I could not ask for. Some day, I would like to find another Rossi model 62 takedown pump. I had a couple of those back in the early 80's, and they saw a lot of use.

Thx for the run down on History of Rossi Steve. I don't even remember seeing Rossi on the Gun,just going by what the Guy said. But I did see Interarms which is what caught My eye. I will go back and give it a little more scrutiny. I have a Marlin 44 but can't hurt to have another.

Look further, if not on the barrel near the rear sight, look underneath on the lower tang maybe (I'm away from mine so I don't recall precisely), it will say A. or Amadeus Rossi.

Nothing wrong with an early Rossi 'cept the detail items Steve noted, and an odd period of seeming cost-cutting late in the Interarms era of a dark "mystery wood" stain, and the safety switch introduced with the LSIs and "forced" onEMF in 2006 (correctable with a Steve/NKJ) fix. I've had close to a dozen over the years, all early Interarms and pre-safety EMFs...very few problems.

When you get it ( ), slug the barrel. My Puma .44 Mag. slugs at about .432". I've only shot lead through it and settled on Ranchdog's 265 gr. RFN w/GC. They drop about .433" from the mold, so I load 'em unsized over some Bluedot. Loads of fun!

I have one of the Interarms '92s in .357 Mag.

Love that thing! I had Steve work it over and put some decent sights and it has become one of my
favorite rifles.

I'd have bought it for that price for sure.

Sounds like you have one of the mid-2000's guns from either LSI or EMF. There was about a 3 year period then they did those odd size bores. As strang as it seem they are still within SAMMI specs but after working with EMF and Rossi I convinced them to change back because even though the specs were right no one offered bullets that large.

I don't know of any InterArms 44mags with oversize bores.

The smith at M&M explained to me once why on earth they did that silliness, but I forget what it was. Something to do with certain Euro bullet specs or some such.

It does say Amadeus Rossi and Interarms. I see what U mean about the sight Steve, I think Daisy sights were a cut above. Forgot to even look atthe front site.
They just got the gun in so have to wait to be able to buy it. It has Pretty wood but a little dinged up and scratched. The bore looks nice and shiney (No bore lite) just a flashlight. It is set aside for Me, still no price. The Shop owner had a Plumbing emergency so He wasn't in.

Get it, you won't regret! While Interarms 92s seldom had what you'd call "premium" stocks, the early ones in particular were a cut above even some of the later post-Interarms fare, which often had the appearance of "softer" wood. Even if mostly plain, at least the early Interarms Rossis resembled walnut or at least a hardwood, and not stained mystery wood.

Saw one last Saturday at a swap meet, only it was .38/.357......
Guy wanted $550.....
It was rough as a cob, so I didn't even bother to try to talk him down

The swap meet covered about 10 acres and I only saw two Rossi 92's the whole day, that one, which was an Interarms and the one I bought for $450, which is an LSI Puma with the safety
Maybe I gave too much for it, but its like brand new, doesn't show any wear, and I've been looking for a .38/.357 for a long time.....

I think that $425 ++ is kinda high. I bought my Puma in So. CA for $450 ++ brand new about 3 or 4 years ago. FWIW, the only consignment sales I've heard of the seller pays consignment fees...

I don't know what arrangements They have between consigner & consignee. My part $35 is for the Private party transfer.$25 for DOJ & $10 for store. This is the only shop that charges sales tax on these type sales.

Yeah, $425 is pretty high. Especially since I saw a brand-new Rossi (Braztech version) on the gun shelf at a local Dicks Sporting Goods store, with a price tag hanging from the lever saying $399.00! 44 Magnum, 20 inch carbine.

Bud's has 44mag Rossi's, 20-inch or 16-inch round, blue for $411 shipped. It looks like they're in stock.
