OT- S&W 7 shot 357 ?? huh

Post by pwl44m »

A Guy came bouncing through the Gun Show yesterday (and I do mean "bouncing") with a Stainless S&W 357 that was 7 shot. I have never heard of such a thing. It was a fairly new Gun that He said was special order. I could have had it for a simple trade but the way He was bouncing I dared not touch it.
The reason I am posting is to get comments as I have never heard of one, doesn't mean it is not possible. Anybody seen one ?

Should be a 686+ IIRC. I don't recall them being special order per se but I don't know if they were popular enough to remain a catalogued item.

Probably a M686 Plus. A friend of mine bought one about 4 or 5 years ago when they first came out and has never fired it. I think Taurus make a 7 shot 357 as well.

Perry,
The 7 shot L frame is alive and well in S&Ws inventory. Here's a link to that page of their web site:

Lots of variations of the theme.

Just to give U an idea of the Guy,He was also carrying around a Win mod 12. Said it was a 1200 & swore to it, said it was right on the barrel.
The one rock steady posted is the one.
Then He mentioned something about being on a Nuc Sub, that COULD splain His actions.
Anyway Thx for the responses, I was trying to see if the holes lined up on lockup, I was very leery to say the least.

I have a 686+ that I picked up 7 or 8 years ago from Academy Sports for around $450 new. Think beefed/scaled up model 66 with a full underlug and an extra round. I have had a couple problems with it over the years, but I don't think that indicates problems with the guns in general. Overall I don't think they are particularly valuable or rare, and it should be easy to find a used example.

The 686+ has been around for at least 12 years, more like 14 if I remember right.

My cousin acquired one in the late 90s (98-99) and they were not new at that time, they'd been out at least a year or two since i had seen one previously.

S&W makes a 7 and an 8-shot .357 (the 8 shot model being built on an N frame).

I've been shooting my 686 Plus for a couple of years now.

It shoots very well.

It is a pita to get good speedloaders for the 7 shot.
The HKS ones are junk.
5-Star makes some beautiful ones for a price.

One of the guns I bought from my late friend's collection was a short-barrelled 686+ sevenshooter. I took off the oversized rubber Hogue grip he had on it and stuck on a set of Ahrends' boot grips, thinking it would make a nice carry gun. Then the Mrs shot it... I think I might still have visitation rights, but she's claimed primary ownership.

They were popular for some types of pistol competions as well. Some people have had the cylinder converted to use full moon clips to speed up reloading. Seems interesting.

^ Not really, the 7 shooters are largely unloved in the shooting sports, there's no place for them. The 8 shot 627 N frames see use in ICOR though.

I always liked them because the cylinder cuts are *between* the cartridge bores, not right on top of them. Check the pictures.

Of course, if you go up to an eight round, they are back in line again.

S&W made them, Taurus made them. I had a Taurus in eight round, 6" ported barrel that was an excellent firearm, but just didn't appeal to me. Fired it a little, put it back the the box and made it a safe queen for a year or two. Sold it for a lot more than I had in it (one of the only things I thank our current president for!) and turned that money toward a 1895 Cowboy in .45/70.

It's always a good idea to walk away from a deal if you get an odd vibe. But tell ya what. I've met several 'boomer' guys and they all universally had an 'odd turn'. Not bad, mind you, just different. Takes a special personality to do what they do. You have to admire them.

I had one a few years ago. I liked the idea, but didn't care for the round butt that most newer Smiths come with so sold it.

Actually pretty popular. I see quite a few Pluses around, and is certainly what I'd get if I needed to replace my K (never!) and wanted to go new(er) or felt compelled to shoot the hotter.357s. The way I think, as a satisfied K owner, I'd want something more--as in capacity--for the weight/size cost incurred over the K. It'd make me feel better anyway :)
