Rossi Puma M92 .357/.38 Lever action carbine stock length

Post by cpy911 »

I have a mid 90's Rossi Puma M92 .357/.38 lever action carbine with the shorter barrel (16"?). The rifle would be better for a child when it comes to the stock length. I am 6'1" with long arms and the little Rossi just seems too small/short. Is there an extension or new longer stock I can put on? Can I put on a crescent stock or a Winchester M92 stock? Options please. I have had the rifle since being a kid and have recently started shooting it again and realized I must have grown since shooting it!

BTW I have an M-1 Garand that fits me nicely, also the M94 30-30 Winchester Pre-64 seems to be a good fit too.

Thanks,

I have seen 94 stocks listed as 94/92, but I can't remember where. I have also seen at least one post somewhere where the owner of a 92 fitted a 94 stock. I can't say for sure how well they fit or how much work it is, but I have seen at least a few references to havuing used a 94 stock on a 92.

The 16" Rossi is one of the very, very few rifles I have ever NOT had to shorten. I must have short arms.

You probably have short arms! Nothing wrong with that as the Rossi M92 is a perfect match for you....we all come in different shapes and sizes and so do leverguns!!! How tall are you???

I put one of these on one of our Rossi Puma's a few years back, and it looked odd but was a reasonable fit for 'function not looks'. I think one of the holes we had to re-drill.

5'-6" last I checked and it's been a long time. May not even be that tall any more.

Someone once told me my legs were "too short."

The way I figure it, they reach the ground so they're just right!

The length of pull on both the 94 & 92 are the same. But, if your pre-64 has the flat checkered buttplate, it will feel longer due to the Rossi's curved carbine buttplate. I don't believe the Winchester stocks will fit Rossis.

Easy to compare, lay one on top of the other, with the triggers lined up; look at the buttplates. Don't have my guns handy, or I'd measure the various stocks on mine and tell ya.

Pre WWII Win 94's and 92's used the same wood. But, it is different than the Rossi. Win rifle or carbine buttstocks can be made to work. They just have to be relieved for the Rossi coil and strut hammer spring.
What you need is a Rossi oct rifle stock. Besides being longer than the carbine stock it's about an 1" longer than the original Win Rifle stock as well.

Here is a 20" Rossi carbine with a crescent rifle stock.

I overlayed my Pre WWII Win '94 and the Mid 90's Rossi M92 lining up the triggers. The stock on the Rossi is about 1/2" shorter than the '94.

However, when I shoulder the '94, I noticed it could also be a little longer too! Seems a tad short for my long arms. It seemed about 1/2" short!
The Rossi is really, really short for me!!!

So, I would say that a stock or extension that is 1" would be perfect in order for the Rossi to be comfortable.

Nate, so, you say the crescent style stock 1" longer than the one I have? Where can I get one?

So, my best bet looks like the crescent stock...but I don't think I want to spend $$$ on a new stock unless someone has a used beater one they would let go, so I may look into extensions.

Below, the two rifles with the triggers lined up...the Rossi is 1/2" shorter

That's good to know.

My next Rossi will be a longer-barreled one and I would probably consider swapping the stock to a carbine stock is one were available for trade at the time. Would beat cutting one.

Let me know if you want my carbine stock if you ever end up with a longer crescent stock. Mine is too short for my long, long arms. :D

It'll be a while before I can swing another one, but I will keep you in mind because I love the length of my carbine.

Thanks.
