Well that's a bit of information, but not quite what I wanted. I really wanted some input from some one who might be in or have been in the area.BAGTIC wrote:http://www.city-data.com/city/Stilwell-Oklahoma.html

Re: OT: Stilwell, OK
According to my map, Stilwell is due east of Muskogee, about a quarter inch from the Arkansas border.

Joe, you would like it there. Lots of gun friendly folks and you are less than 50 mile from the Oil Capital Rod & Gun Club in Coweta northwest of you. I shoot there back when the Tulsa area CAS club was there. Good folks.

I have yet to meet an Okie that I didn't like.

Re: OT: Stilwell, OK
Ahhh Adair County
what do you want to know. I am very familiar with it.
Stilwell is kind of a quirky place. Visitors are not normally taken a shine too in a long term fashion (meaning don't unpack). like most towns in Eastern Oklahoma, your family reputation makes or breaks you. I have lived there and have many clients in the area. The Old History in the area is amazing. the fruits and vegetables grown there have outstanding taste and are held at premium. In fact I had a Stepdad who was a CPA there and some clients actively traded produce/beef and pork in leiu of monetary funds in 1990. I believe birdseye foods is there. Tyson was huge and probably still is. Cherokee blood (CIB) will help you in many ways. it is not an area where you can expect your neighbors to help you mend fences and ask alot of questions. there is a reason why the area attracts people like the Millars (Elohim City).
It is an area where a man can take the stand in court and tell the jury "that sumbitch needed killin" and walk away a free man after a very short deliberation.
Eastern Oklahoma, both North and South are known for the people, who are totally different population groups than those who live in Tulsa or OKC. i've lived all in several cities in Eastern Oklahoma and spent 7 years in OKC.
Be prepared to share your hunting privileges with the rest of the county, boundaries in hunting areas are usually not distinguished or honored. 40 acre rule is probably in effect.
I grew up in what is considered a "rough" area of the state and I consider Adair County to be one of the roughest in the state. just my opinion along with most of my family. YMMV. Go for a visit. I suggest during the Strawberry Festival.
BTW Nate is correct.
Oil Capitol is one of the finest ranges in the midwest in my opinion. skeet, trap, rifle, pistol and CAS ta boot. outstanding facility.
Good Luck, you might think its heaven on earth.

Re: OT: Stilwell, OK
Unique perspective. First (and only) time I ever piloted a plane was over Stilwell. I was in town for a family-member's graduation at OSU. My SIL's cousin took me up in his Cessna for a tour d' Stilwell and gave me the controls. Though I (thought I) knew the "very small movements" rule for cockpit controls--from my father's stories of being a WWII era pilot--I immediately put it in a nose dive (!!)..and got a real good view of greater Stilwell--lots and losts of green (and water)! The pilot calmy said I might want to gently back off - and I leveled it off, and very quickly handed the controls back over! This was thirty-some years ago, but it did look like a lot great shootin' and fishin' country!

Re: OT: Stilwell, OK
Thanks for all the information on eastern OK. There is a property with a very .... um cheap monthly lease price that we were interested in. After contacting the owners and getting further info we decided to pass on it.

Re: OT: Stilwell, OK
Texas and New Mexico (or Colorado if you're a John Wayne version fan) are closer to God's country than Okiehoma, which is where the story is set. Look up Ft. Smith, Bagby Store, McAlester, Winding Stair Mountains - then look up Stilwel, OK.Cast Bullet Hunter wrote:Why would it? It was all filmed in New Mexico and Texas! I know what you're saying though. The filiming location of the 2010 movie looks a lot more like Okiehoma than the filming location of the 1969 version.

Re: OT: Stilwell, OK
I grew up 4 blocks away from the site of the J.J. McAlester Store in North Town. the Tobusky Co Courthouse is located in the park a couple of blocks away at a park named after my family.

Tobusky is the Choctaw word for coal. after statehood, the county was renamed Pittsburg. Coal mining was the prevalent issue of the day and cause for the MKT Railroad to drive into town.
many of the old people in the county were born in coal mining camps/towns and their place of legal birth on drivers licenses and 4473 forms are " Number 12" or "Number 17."
interestingly, most people don't realize that J.J. McAlester actually hid from Choctaw executioners several times after death warrants were issued by the tribe for illegally mining on Indian lands. he ended up marrying a halfbreed to gain entrance to some business dealings and to avoid further death warrants.
