I have some 110gr 30 carbine bullets,308 win cases and have plenty of Unique laying
around. If I combine all three can there be problems?I have looked around but dont have any
solid info for a safe load.I dont have a need for them, but I dont have a need for half my
things.

According to the Belding & Mull Handbook of 1949, a 110 grain jacketed bullet plus 16.4 grains of Hercules Unique will produce 2205 fps out of the .30-40 Krag. I know the .30-40 is not the .308 but, the case capacities are similar. The .308 averages 49.6 grains of water while the .30-40 averages 47.4 grains. No pressure data is given but, the Krag was rather a weak action with only 1 locking lug. HTH

Re: O/T Unique and 308win ?
An un-referenced source I came across 1600 fps for a 100 grain speer in a .308 using 10 grains Unique, which is a bit more 'cautious' than the one above.
Normally I don't use un-referenced sources for much, but I think Rocky Raab's "Universal .30 load" has been discussed here - http://www.reloadingroom.com/index_file ... l%2030.htm (you have to scroll to the right to see anything on that web page for some reason).

After more research I found what I was looking for. Complete Guide To Handloading by Philip B. Sharpe has the following data for a 110 grain bullet listed for the .30-40 Krag:
8.0 grains of Unique--1220 fps--no pressure listed--
12.0 '' '' '' --1645 fps--19,100 psi --
16.4 " " " --2100 fps--34,000 psi --
18.4 " " " --2270 fps--42,000 psi --
All Loads recommended by Hercules
And friend Rocky's universal load of 10 grains should be just fine. One caution is to be absolutely certain when charging your cases that no double charge slips into one! This is very easy to do when using small charges in big cases. I use a lot of Unique in loads ranging from the .38 Special to .45-70 but, I employ cast bullets instead of Jacketed. Also, I am very cautious in the powder step, even to seating the bullet each time I powder a case. HTH

Re: O/T Unique and 308win ?
I remember these from years ago. I have used more unique than any powder. At one time I had 4 -10lb cardboard canisters. It was my pride and joy. bought them for 5 dollars each at a garage sale. They were new and unopened. Oh those were the days.8.0 grains of Unique--1220 fps--no pressure listed--

I loaded a bunch of 100 grain plinkers in 30-06, 30-30, 308 and 30 krag. Most of them were sub sonics and many of them were loaded for range shooting for rabbits, ducks, and chickens at 100 yds iron sights. talk about fun shooting a life size rabbit at 150 yds with iron sights. We would load each gun for accuracy regardless of sound barrier. I supplied the powder, another supplied the bullets, and the other supplied the food.

Scott, Yes, I have used Unique since 1964 and think it may be the most useful powder around. Did I mention I really like it?

Thanks for the info!I loaded a round to see it.I think I will load a few more to try and
I always measure each load then seat the bullet before loading powder in the next case
on loads of this type.

Re: O/T Unique and 308win ?
seeing how all three of us together weigh almost 1000 lbs, I think the man who had to supply the food was taken advantage of. Of course, we complained about the high cost of powder and worried aloud about how high lead was getting. And, Primers we didn't forget primers. We speculated how with the serial numbers on the bullets and the signature powder mix primers had how long we would be able to continue to shoot. The guy supplying the food was more than gracious to supply the food. He actually thought he was getting off cheap. Only friends can take advantage of a friend this bad.

I posted a thread about Unique & .30 cartridges a few weeks back... Something like "the ultimate .30 load" or some such.
