There is a checkered pistol grip 99 or 1899 takedown, at the local shop. I couldn't read the roll stamp/serial number, for details, since my reading specs were in the truck. The bore was fairly small so I think it was a 250-3000. I know squat about these, but this was pretty mint. It also had a windage adjustable Lyman tang sight. It wasn't priced yet, but I got to handle it.
Please educate me here...................
How the heck do you take this down? I tried opening the action, pulling the takedown slide, and twisting, but couldn't get it to budge.

I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.
The forearm should have a sliding tab on the underside. This will release the forearm. Open the action and the barrel will twist off in the normal manner (counterclockwise), about 10 turns.

That's what I attempted, but the barrel did not budge. Maybe it has never been taken down and is just tight. If it's there tomorrow I will see if I can put a drop or 2 of Break Free where the barrel and receiver meet, then try again. Every time I try brute strength I tend to muck things up.

YES that would of been bad! This setup is similar to SxS / O&U Shotguns. Forearm of first then the barrel(s)! Good thing I posted the pictures and they are worth many words in your case. Glad to be of help.
I would like to know what the serial number is of this rifle you have seen. If it is a 250-3000 in a take down with checkered pistol grip it could be a 250-3000 RIFLE. This was the first gun chambered for the 250-3000 cartridge. If the trigger has a checker board pattern on it....you have found a real special gun. First year of the 250-3000 was 1914. I have a 1915 gun that shoots very well with 87gr. bullets. Good luck with your find.
Don't feel to bad JDAD, It took me about 5 minutes to figure out how mine came apart after I got it home. Seller didn't know it was a takedown and I didn't volunteer the info either.
My 1899 303 sav. has the smooth trigger where as all the rest have those verticle ribbed triggers.
I was wondering if it was just my imagination or what, but it seems like there are a lot of Savages that are takedowns as compared to Marlins and Winchesters.
(discloser) Not a gunsmith, just a tinkerer at heart, it gets me into trouble, When I take it apart...
Just remember to open the lever before turnin the barrel,
helps some

A few stumbling blocks first......
1. Is it still there when I stop by today.
2. Is it priced, within my budget.
3. Do I really want to find and buy brass, bullets, & dies.
and the BIG roadblock....
I'm picking up my first 1911 next week......a Wilson Combat.

It was gone by the time I stopped in yesterday. I didn't bother to ask the details.
WTF???? Like me, you ain't no "spring chicken" and by now, you should have graduated from the "School Of Hard Knocks". ( I have a PHD in it---Dr. Sixgun ) That old saying---"You snooze--You lose" is mighty hard to shake. Oh! Just to add insult to injury, (nothing personal ) that Lyman windage adjustable sight is hard to find. ---------------"Dr". Sixgun
