Savage 99 Procured

Post by Alloy Snake »

There was a local gunshow this weekend that I felt compelled to go to and actually was a pretty good one,Finally on the last row there it was-A 90% 308.Feel like I got a great deal on it,Just wondering if the A in the front of the serial# means anything-With the A not in it the manufacture date comes up as a 1948.Missing the rear sight I went ahead and put a Nikon 3x9x40 Monarch on it.Range report to come!

Sounds like you have a nice gun. I don't know anything about the serial numbers, but there are several on here who do. Hope you enjoy every minute with your new rifle.

There was no 308 in 1948.

The only thing I know for sure is it is a 99E in 308,Hopefully it will be alot of fun as it will see the woods often.

E models in .243 & .308 came out in 1961 ...look on the lever boss for a small letter stamped in it.. that letter will identify year of manufacture
L= 1960
M= 1961
N= 1962
O= SKIPPED
P=1963
Q= SKIPPED
R= 1964 - Savage 99 tang safety introduced
S= 1965
T= 1966
U= 1967
V= 1968
W= 1969
X= 1970

Those savages are some real nice pieces of iron. Got several and they are real accurate.
Enjoy yours.

I believe the A prefix puts it with the 1972 and later guns. Is yours a straight grip saddle rifle? Love mine...

Here is a pic,Not a great one but never the less.I think it is a lightweight model-Has the 20 inch barrel and appears to have an alloy magazine.I see an M on the front lower reciever-I will look for some other markings in good light.

Looks like a really nice example of an "E." (Believe the rotor is aluminum.) Enjoy your rifle.
