Marlin 1895M 450 Marlin Vee thread OD and thread pitch.

Post by NFG »

Anyone out there have this information...I keep asking but no one knows for sure or isn't telling.

Thanks

OT - My "switch barrel Marlin 336" 45-70 barrel is fitted, does go bang and is now in the lathe waiting for the reamer to take it to 458 Amer x 2.25". Hurry up and wait.

What's .458 Amer x 2.25"...?

.450 Marlin. Have one but don't know anyone with a reamer.

The belt on a 450 Marlin and a 458 WIN MAG are a shade different . The 458 American is the 458 WIN MAG cut down to 2 1/4" .

6PT is right...basically...I will trim the case to whatever case lengh is required to keep the 2.65" COL and crimp in the crimp groove on whatever bullet I happen to pick...the case length can vary from about 2.20 to almost 2.4"depending on the bullet.

I have a Browning BLR in 450 Marlin and somewhere I posted HOW I set up a 458 WM case or ANY belted mag case for that matter to shoot in the 450 M chamber...

But here it is again:

I found the end of the chamber mouth in the 450 M by starting with a 458 WM case of 2.25" length, kept trimming it until the bolt closed...2.15"...trimmed an additional 0.005" to 2.145", the case then was "headspacing on the case mouth". I started with a low end load with 350 gr Hornady FP's and the bullet seated into the lands about 0.010" and worked up, chronographing the loads and checking for pressure signs. Everything worked OK.

Some of you might know that a belted mag is supposed to headspace on the belt at 0.220"...BUT...maybe you didn't know that different brands of cases have a different belt measurement. The cases I use for my various belted mag rifles measure from ~0.212" to 0.228" depending on the brand.

The RP case I used in the test measured 0.215" belt length, the Hornaday 450M case measures ~0.250"...that's only a difference of~0.035". I couldn't measure the belt depth inside the BLR chamber but I will hazard a guess it is slightly more than 0.250"...but how much more I won't guess.

By seating the bullet into the lands, keeping the loads below max allowable pressures and trimming the case to 2.145" I kept the headspace well below any problem area.

THIS TEST PROCEDURE WAS DONE IN THE BLR WHICH CAN HANDLE BELTED MAGNUM PRESSURES OF 65 KPSI...I DON'T RECOMMEND ANYONE DOING THIS PROCEEDURE IN A MARLIN LEVERGUN...IT IS FOR INFORMATION ONLY AND FOR MY LEARNING PROCESS.

As far as the 458 A is concerned I am using a 458 WM reamer because I want the ~0.700 "freebore" which is why I can trim the case to fit my parameters and not hit the chamber mouth at the "Normal" 458 Amer length of 2.00" plus a bit.

I could have rechambered the Marlin 336 barrel to 450 M but because I have the BLR and I load to higher pressures than recommended for a Marlin levergun, I decided it would be much safer to go the 458 A route instead...no chance of getting loads for different guns mixed up :!: :!: :!:

I WILL mark the Marlin 336 barrel as a 458 American x 2" for safety sake.

I also built a 458 A on a SMLE action but the COL is 3.05". I use 430, 450 and 500 gr bullets in the SMLE, but I will only use the Horn 350 gr in the Marlin levergun so the ammo cant' get mixed up, visually at least.
