This weekend I had the pleasure of attending the Battle of Selma Reenactment. I found it a pleasure and joy to be around the men and women who put this on. My uncle grew up in Selma and had been trying to get me to come visit for a while and since I was going that way anyways I figured I would also see him and visit some of the places there. I didnt realize that Selma had so many beautiful buildings and such a rich history.
While there I took in some of the museums and other attractions. For a history buff like myself I found it very interesting.
Here are a few pics that I took while there. Some of them were taken in Live Oak Cemetery (one of the most beautiful cemeteries I have ever seen) and some where on the reenactment site. Hope you enjoy.

These are from one of the museums. It was built in 1850s as a womans college however when the war broke out it was used as a hospital and has been a place of service ever since.
Some of the relics that the CSA Army pushed into the Alabama River so the Union could not get them.

I found this to be very interesting. Its a letter from a CSA Soldier to Abe Lincoln asking to for a pardon. Abe wrote him back and granted him the pardon with conditions. One of those conditions was that he pledge his oath to the Union and never go back to the CSA. The pardon letter is signed by Abe and was wrote just days before Abe was shot to death.
This is the first Confederate White House where Jefferson Davis lived. To think of what went on inside this home is amazing.
Cool but remind me not to make any doctor appointments.
Nice pictures.

Very good pics. Thanks for sharing them.

In the Docs little demonstration he would cut off a hand and throw it towards the crowd.....and then when he wanted it back he would say just that......"Can you give me a hand"
20 years ago I was invited to join the confederate calvary....
at the time, the cost of getting a horse and the entire outfit...
was just too much.....something I really regret not doing....
That's what I thought. He was an unsung genius at what he did. Good source of quotes, too: "No darn man kills me and lives!" Uttered before he killed some moron that had stabbed him with a pen knife. Gotta love it.

Well, it wasn't "darn", but the forum software changed what I had typed.
Also, I had it backwards: Forrest stabbed and killed a subordinate with a pen knife after he had shot Forrest. Had something to do with an argument over some lost artillery pieces, I believe.
They have reinactments out here as well. But, we can't do it where it really happened, cuz I don't think there were any civil war battles in California. Last one I went to had a night reinactment. Of course they had big ole lights so the spectators could see, but it sure gave it a different feel.
I, also, take many photos. Here's about the only useable night shot I got. Hard in bad light with everyone moving about.
Interesting side note, the lights in the upper right are from the Reagan Library.

Thanks for posting the pic. I bet it is different at night. At this one they did a night firing of the cannons which was neat. Some of them had colored flairs in them or something to make it more of a spectacle.

I'm sure you had a great time. I hope you had time to tour the Alabama Archives Bldg next door to the White House of the Confederacy.
It was a spur of the moment trip. Next time I will have to let you know.
I did take a tour of the Alabama Archives and also the Hank Williams museum since I was right there. Didnt have time to go see his grave though. I am wanting to go back again in the near future. That area is full of so much history and I really want to take in more.
I finally got to see your pictorial. Lot's of excellent pics. I'll bet that was a noisy place for a while too.
Funny thing, my Win XP box crashed yesterday and it would choke up and quit after two or three pics. Yet this old Win 98 box which is way out of date opened and displayed every one of them.
Aw well, good show.

Well glad you finally got to see them. It was noisy at times for sure.
