O.T. Favorite Bass lures?
Work is very slow....any slower and I would be going backwards....anyway
I have been messing around in the garage fixing this and that....
and decided to clean out the fishing tackle box..... its mostly freshwater stuff...
So...whats your favorite largemouth bass lure
When i was younger...I used a hand made wooden 4" stick bait with 3 trebble hooks...
that they just could not resist at first light.....and dusk...
I also used a gitter bug with great success....but that was up north....
Down here in Florida, the fishing capital of the world....I just cant catch em as easy
in these dark waters....Tried most of them...rapalas, spinner baits, buzz baits...
plastics worms....
You know whats fun...catching a 4 1/2 foot gator with a top water buzz bait....and trying
to get the 7 dollar lure out of his mouth...That guy was pretty strong too....
pulled the bass boat around a while

Ok guys, don't laugh at me, but I've had a lot of success over the last 10 years with Banjo Minnows. You know, the ones you see on tv? They are my go to lures. When I'm not catching with anything else I can put a Banjo on there and I'd say more than half the time I catch something within the first couple of casts.
My favorite traditional type lures are 1. a motor oil colored Berkley Power Worm 2. H&H Spinner baits or similar 3. Scum Frog for a weedless top water lure when there is a lot of scum on top of the water 4. Rattle Traps for clear open water fishing.
I very rarely use anything else for bass besides what I mentioned here even though I have a much wider selection. I don't get to fish much these days, but that may change soon since I've got a 35 acre lake at the front of my neighborhood.

Re: O.T. Favorite Bass lures?
I fish for bass with either an ultralight trout rod and a very small popper that is painted in a perch pattern, mostly bright green (it's sold as a crappie lure), or with a 5 wt fly rod and a bright green popper with a skirt of that rubber band type material also light green. It's effective with largemouths and with black crappies (rare enough here) and bluegills (pound for pound, the most fun fish to catch there is). FWIW when ya hook an 18" big mouth on a 5 wt fly rod or an ultralight rod with 2 lb line, ya got yerself a challenge. I've caught 24" pike on that ultralight rig too, working from a kayak.

A Mepps spinner if I'm using a spinning rod. With the 6 wt fly rod any kind of popper as long as it's black.

Re: O.T. Favorite Bass lures?
I like a much heavier fly rod, (7 or and a black hula popper. The Fred Arbogast lures are no longer made but I find a few NOS online. Usually use a smaller popper about 2' in front of the big one. Years ago I liked the Webers with rubber legs but haven't seen them for a long time.
Boy is a 5 or 6 pounder fun on a fly rod. Even the smaller ones are a blast.

Re: O.T. Favorite Bass lures?
I like top water fishing.
Red & White or Frog colored Jitterbugs, 3/8 or 5/8 ounce,
When I hear the frogs croaking, I use weedless frogs like those from Creme or Burke.
I use the larger size. The green and brown ones seem to work equally well.
I fish from shore, and there is usually a mass of weeds extending out 6 to 20 feet out.
I look for dinner plate sized holes in the weeds. I cast across the hole, and the use the rod to make the frog look like it is swimming. Once in the hole, wait about 10 seconds. If you don't get a strike, I will cast to the same hole 4-5 times before moving on. I het a LOT of bass this way. Most weigh in the 3-5 pound class.
Oftentimes, a frog will jump the lure and try to mate with it. Not only is it funny, but you occassionally will hook the frog. They make great catfish bait too!!!!

I almost forgot to list one of my favorites, a green and orange speckled Rooster Tail. I occasionally have good luck with the brown ones also.

Re: O.T. Favorite Bass lures?
Hula poppers... The kind I whittled and painted when I was a kid...Part of the river we fished was only open for trout fishing... Come trout season 3 or four of us teens would float that part of the river in tubes or I man life rafts...but Bass fish it... It was fun to hoist up a stringer full of nice bass to show off to the trout guys standing in rows on the banks...Bunch of smart @~~ kids..

A Texas rigged purple nightcrawler. But out here, I'd rather fish for salmon and steelhead, or big german browns.

Re: O.T. Favorite Bass lures?
Don't lake/boat fish much and if I do, won't be out past 9am.
I like jitterbugs and buzz baits. My first big bass was 1974 - 6-1/2 lbs. on a jitterbug - and a daiwa minicast.
Usually, I'm fly fishing in the rivers, and so I have to go with cats whisker
this is a 28" largemouth I sight-fished on the Sabinal. It's over 9 lbs.
next best fly is north fork whistler
This is a 22", over 4-lb. endemic Guadalupe bass I caught on the Guadalupe in '05. Would have been the record except I released it.

Releasing live bait of unknown origin into a lake is responsible for a lot of damage every so oftentxpete wrote: the best is live shad minnows don't get caught doing that in WA state.the libs will throw you in jail.

Re: O.T. Favorite Bass lures?
My favorite largemouth bait is the large live nightcrawlers I catch in the fronty yard(actually my friend catches). I fish them just like tournament guy's fish the rubber worms. And I change them frequently. Nothing like the real thing. They just flat work. Work a live nightcrawler off a mud bank in slightly stained water, and you have a bass on your line. Tom.

I haven't heard of this one in years. It used to be made by South Bend. But I found the Bass Oreno is still made and sold by Luhr Jensen Co. Anyway my favorite bass lure is the Senko. It seems to work in any size and any way I rig it.
