On Topic -- First levergun purchase in a while / Savage 99H

Found a Savage 99H Carbine in 30-30 from 1932 in an out of the way funshop recently. A 99H in 30-30 was sort of a "grail" of mine for a number of years; everything I found was either hammered or four-digit priced. This one is neither. I cleaned it up and out, put a dab of almond-colored paint on the brass bead front sight and took it to the range with 170 gr Remington factory ammo. From the bench it did 1.75" - 2" groups, opening slightly as it heated up. Had to use the second notch to get elevation spot-on at 100 yds.

The buttstock appears lighter in the photos due to the flash; it's about the same color and shade as the forend.

It was worth the wait and the $550.

Looks good Noah, what else did that out of the way shop have ? Any Colts or Winchester 92s ?
Wish some of my finds would clean up to look that good.

Very nice, when I was a dumb kid I never cared for the 99's, but now I wish I had a pile of them.

Kind of what I thought when I saw it. I especially like straight-grip Savage 99s with shorter barrels, but this is the first one that I've ever owned. I could do without the carbine band, but it is what it is. I can see why people like the 99, though.

The shop owner said it came from a two-owner family, the guy recently died and his kids aren't firearms enthusiasts.

Nothing else spectacular in the shop. It's mostly Lorcin, High Point, and Heritage for handguns, and gray polymer stocked Stevens and Mossberg 464s for rifles, with a couple 10-22s and used Marlin 30-30s thrown in.

Thanks to everyone for their comments and input!

Very nice find. It was a sad day when Savage quit making the 99.

Very Nice, My little 99,303 takedown is 98 years old and I find the design a true marvel. just think what a stir it would cause today if a new rifle was brought out with all the features of the 99. starting with a no tool takedown system that requires about 20 seconds. :) .
