30/30 cat sneeze load.

Post by gamekeeper »

Our forum buddy Nath has just sent me a box full of 30/30 brass, bullets, dies etc etc. even a box of Winchester 3" .410 ammo :D

I'm completely new to reloading but would like to make up some loads suitable for Foxes.
I only have a basic Lee Loader, Auto prime and Lee powder measure kit.
I don't get to use my 94 as often as I'd like, so I won't require hundeds of rounds.

Any suggestions are welcome and yes I will be buying a couple of reloading books, which ones do you guys swear by?

Once again I thank Nath for his generosity.. :D

Get yourself a reloading scale. The least expensive ones on the market will do just fine. As to manuals....Lyman has always been one of the best for beginners to get started with. The best way to learn is to find someone local to you who wouldn't mind spending a few hours helping you get started. If that's not feasible....get on several reloading forums, and ask a lot of questions. As a general rule...folks who reload their own ammo are usually quite willing to help a newbie along.

Thanks guido, the scale will be on my list.

Nath, I've loaded a couple with your Win. 231 and suggested load, I will try them out later.

Whilst typing all this I got another squirrel with my 9422 using a CB long. :o

Here's some "QUICK" notes I made from info I found on the net and I had them saved on my PC. I've tried some, not most and I make no claims as to their safety. Some notes are short and almost un-understandable others are self explanatory. USE INFO AT OWN RISK!

18-20grs SR4759

110gr Carbine bullets using 4198 and 4895 @ around 2000fps

10grs Unique and 100-110gr jackets bullets

http://www.leverguns.com/articles/paco/3030varmint.htm

http://www.gmdr.com/lever/lowveldata.htm

125/130gr Jacketed with 8-8.5grs of Unique for 1500fps

13grs Bluedot behind a 150gr bullet (not sure if this is jacketed)

IMR SR4759 powder may be the best.

15grs SR4759 behind a 100 gr JFP 1834fps from 24" barrel

17grs SR4759 behind a 150gr JFP 1794fps from a 24" barrel

13 grs of Blue Dot will work in about any .30cal

10grs of Unique will work in any .30cal with 100gr speer plinker at around 1475
12grs of Unique in 30/30 with 100gr speer at around 1625fps

100gr bullet w/ 15grs sr4759 = 1834fps in 24" barrel (Chuck Hawks)
100gr bullet w/ 18grs sr4759 = 2034fps in 24" barrel (Chuck Hawks)

Not quite sure what your looking for but for a "cat sneeze" load you want to stay under the speed of sound, so......keep it under 1100. I have found that using the heaviest lead/cast bullet for the caliber works the best. In the 30-30, 7 grains of Unique and a 170 lead/cast bullet will drill through about anything and is accurate to 150 or so. -------------Sixgun

GK, I found those bullets did not kill to well, they are hard somewhat!

I did kill a fox with one, through it's head though! That shot was a lucky shot really!

The measures you have, are they the dippers? You should be able to find what they give for different powders!

Scales are a big plus.

The 5 grn of 231 should sound something like a 2" 410 IIRC.

231 is very fast, please don't be tempted to put more in!

Sometimes in Gunmart there are adds for cast 150 grn .308" bullets. I have used them in the past with Blue dot. 13grns. Shotgun loud but handy beyond 100yds, bouncers though!

Have fun.

Nath, yes I thought they sounded as loud as a .410, just the job for not alerting the entire neighbourhood to what I'm doing!
I will continue to plink with them till I know how they group.
I have some RB in .310 from when I had a Pocket Colt, hope try them out on bunnies.
I think Jeremy will have some data for that.

Some reading material: http://guns.connect.fi/gow/arcane1.html

You will find it necessary to use soft lead bullets larger than the barrel groove size to get good results.
A .310 or .311 bullet is about the right size for a .308 barrel.

At subsonic velocities, a lighter than normal bullet will stabilize better than a heavy bullet.

"Cat sneeze" loads are not just subsonic, they are also quiet.
Think tiny loads in small cases with long barrels. (Rook rifles)

Ed Harris over at the CBA forum has done a lot of work in this area and seems eager to help folks get started.

7.0 grs 700X is also a good load and a cat sneeze type you are looking for.

Reloading is a separate addiction not under the purview of this forum....

In other words, good luck! I started in 1971 or 1972 and it just gets worse and worse. Soon you'll be casting your own bullets of evil lead and then, look out!
