When I bought this place in 1975, it was two years old and within two blocks from the north edge of CS - city limits. Zoned for rustic (lawn planting not required - as it was in most of CS - even across the street) - plus privacy 1/2 acre lots (my dogs were both near 200#) and pine trees (a lot smaller then) and some 20 acres of "open space" behind us that can never be developed -

Now, the geographic center of town is less than 2 miles east of us - town can only grow north and east due to geographic factors - but, our wild life continues to thrive and, mostly, we are friends - exception being the bears who break up wife's bird feeders.

And - even this guy is a friend - he's not threatening - just picking up some goodies I tossed him - they also keep the mouse population down

Image

As are my Scrub Jays - sharing at happy hour

Image

Plus - this obviously at home guy

Here are some deer pics that I took at our place up in Northern Michigan.
The Dead one is the one I shot last year with my Marlin 336ss in 30-30-win.
It is amazing that the old dirty thirty is still capable of killing deer since they
have been recently modified not to die with such bullets.

I found some deer pics, but they are too large of file size to post. I don't know how to reduce them. My program clips them when I try to "reduce file size".

Good pics tho guys.

Hmmmm lets see !

Image
Image

An 8 pointer I killed behind my home in 2008 using a 1978 vintage Marlin 1895 45-70 with a Weaver K2.5 on top shooting the Ranch Dog 460-350GC bullet .

Image

A scrub I got in 2009 with a Mauser 98 I had in 6.5-06 . Used the Hornady 129 grain SST . Killed this one from the same treesand I used for the deer above .

Image

Killed this deer in august of 2009 on a DCP . First deer I ever shot that was in velvet . Also was shot with a 444 shooting the Ranch Dog 432-350GC bullet . At the time this was the first head of game killed with that bullet .

Image

A pair I got one morning in 2007 or 2008 with a old 444 was shooting "Boomer Mikey's" 434-330GC bullet pushed with XMP 5744 . Shot the doe and almost immediattely the buck popped up over the hill so I layed him out as well .

Image

A button I layed low at all of 15 yards using a Marlin 336ER shooting Ranch Dog's 359-180GC bullet .

Image

A spike at about 10 yards using a Marlin 1895G shooting Ranch Dog's 460-425GC bullet !

Image

First one I ever killed using my Savage 10ML-II and the Hornady 250 grain SST sabot !

Image

Image

Two deer I popped in a minute using the then new 308 Marlin Express in a model 308MXLR . They were literally boom flop , boom flop !!!!

Some more ,

Image

A doe with a 1965 circa Marlin 444 shooting the Ranch Dog 432-265GC .

Image

Another doe with the Ranch Dog 432-285GC and a circa 1968 Marlin 444 same year as the one above .

Image

Also from the same year a doe with the Ranch Dog 432-300GC shot from a 1971 vintage 444 Marlin .

Image

Doe shot with a Marlin 336XLR in 35 REM using the Hornady Leverevolution factory stuff . At 40 yards it was boom flop !

Image

A pair of slicks I got one morning using a Marlin 1895MXLR in the 450 Marlin caliber and shooting the Hornady Leverevolution . Big doe ran maybe 30 yards after the shot and the smaller one was shot second and went boom flop !

Image

A little buck I killed using a Marlin 375 shooting the Ranch Dog 379-210GC bullet .

Image

Image

Image

Three slicks I got in 2 days using a Marlin 444SS shooting the Speer 270 grain jacketed bullet .

Image

Scrub I killed a couple eyars ago using a Marlin 1895XLR shooting the BArnes 300 grain "Original" bullet . Shot him at about 75 yards , boom flop !

Image

Shot this one opening day a few years ago with another Marlin 336ER in 356 WIN using old factory Winchester 200 grain ammo . Shot him at about 85 yards and another boom flop .

Image

Little 8 I shot with the Marlin 444XLR and handloaded Hornady 265 FP's .

Now for the good stuff !

Image

First 6 point Sika I ever killed . Got him a 1999 in the early ML season on a lease we had in Dorchester County Maryland . Shot him at a measured 14 yards . Used my old Knight 50 cal Disc rifle shooting a Nosler 250 grain Partition bullet in a MMP sabot . And as you may have guessed he was a certain boom flop !

Image

My second 6 point Sika . Killed this one on the Blackwater NWR in 2005 . Shot him at about 50 yards using a Savage 210F 12 gauge bolt action rifled slug gun . I was shooting Winchester 2 3/4" Partition Gold factory loads . Shot this deer in the right shoulder coming towards me . He ran toward me and veered to my left at about 20 yards and stood there a few seconds before falling over . I found the Partition slug under the skin in his left hip . That one field dressed at 90 pounds which is considered nice for one of these guys . That guy took the full force of that slug and never went backwards .

Couldn't leave this out !

Next to last deer I killed in 2010 !

Shot her at a lazered 26 yards with my maternal grandfathers old W.C. Scott 10 gauge 2 7/8" SxS . Was using my own handloaded buckshot loads , they had 12 "00" pellets . At the boom of the gun she literally had the carpet jerked from beneath her .

Here are what I managed to get on the Balckwater NWR for the last two years .

Image

Nice Sika doe I shot at about 65 yards during the early ML season . Shot here with my Savage 10ML-II shooting the Hornady 250 SST pushed with 42 grains of VV-N110 . She ran about 30 yards and dropped . This was the 2009 season !

Image

This is a whitetail doe I killed in 2009 on the Blackwater NWR during the first day of the gun season . She was also the first game animal I ever fired the then new Savage 220F at . She was at a measured 126 yards . Shot her with the Remington 20 gauge 2 3/4" AccuTip , she ran about 30 yards after the shot .

Image

Image

Here's a pair of Sika does I got on the Blackwater NWR the first day of the 2010 gun season . Was using the Savage 220F again and this time had shots at 35 and 45 yards !

Yes sir !

But with the whitetails I keep the backstraps and tenderloin . And then take the rest down to my gunsmith buddy and we make burger out of all of it for use in the shop at lunch time !

Sika deer are a different story !
You better do something really nice for me or I better like you an awfull lot as a person before I give any of that away !

For the last twnety years or so I've averaged almost 12 deer a year combined between whitetail and sika .

This one is of a deer that was hit by a car doing 140mph in Germany. I love that. And to BMW's credit, the windshield didn't even break. Good job engineers.

Hmmm, Roe, finer grained meat, can be "gamey". Depends on what they are feeding on as normal, can go tough if very easily over cooked. Very lean meat too.

On the plus side they are very easy to carry out :)

Hmmm I've always wanted to take a couple Roe Deer and of course if I ever got one I would have to sample it as well !

I think my top choices so far would have to Elk and Sika tied for first . I had some overcooked moose a year or so ago that I think woulda been better if I had cooked it .
Whitetail and mule deer are about the same to me . Antelope isn't my all time favourite and black bear for me leaves alot to be desired on the table . I have however had wild hog that was excellent both as a cut of meat and as sausage .
