neck sizing and case gauge

Just tried out neck sizing some 348 Win case with my neck sizer I bought awhile back.I use a Wilson case gauge to check my reloaded ammo.My neck sized cases are "proud" of where they should sit in the gauge by a wee bit. It seems to me that neck sizing only , would always lead to this situation.I loaded 25rds of some cast lead bullets, they seem to fit the chamber of the rifle fine , but until I can get out to the range, I won't know for sure could some experienced reloader who neck sizes only fill me in on the case gauge issue? I use Wilson case gauges by the way.

I reload for over 60 calibers and I never used a gauge of any sort. If it fits in the chamber, shoot it. With neck sizing you are only sizing down the neck so if you previously fired that brass in your chamber, everything will be fine.---------------Sixgun

I am with Sixgun. I neck size only for a couple cartridges and don't use a case gauge for anything. The only thing I check is the max case length and trim as needed. If the case was fired in your gun the measurements of the case don't matter as the case is now sized to your chamber which is the whole point of just neck sizing in the first place.

How often do you full length size these cases? About how many loadings do you get? Do you segregate cases to specific rifle strictly? I tried some today in two different rifles, worked great

Full length resizing will no doubt make cases fit your case gauge better, but then they won't fit your chamber as well. Count me among those who never use a case gauge in reloading, tho I do measure case length & trim as needed. For target work in my bolt action rifles I neck size only, after the first firing, unless I will use the same ammo in different rifles, or if cases that've been loaded more than once start getting hard to chamber. For hunting ammo, semiautos & lever actions I'd FL resize to be sure they'll always chamber (I no longer hunt, for health reasons.) In some cases, such as high pressure semiauto stuff, you might even need to use a small base die. Frankly, I've never found much use for a case gauge at all.

Wilson makes great stuff, but not the same as your chamber. Cast loading you might never need to FLS. For hunting ammo Check each cartridge in chamber. Gary
