Winchester 94 Missfires

Ok, guys here is a problem I need some help with, I have a Winchester 94 that won't shoot down hill!!,(thats a fact}. If you hold the muzzle at or about a 45 degree angle down the striker slides forward and ends up even with the locking lug, resulting in the hammer not hitting the striker. I have taken the gun apart and cleaned the firing pin, striker and the firing pin chamber in the bolt, it is as clean as a hounds tooth, and lightly lubricated with gun oil. The F/pin measures 3.568, the striker measures 0.402-403. The F/pin and striker show no signs of peening and look to be in perfect condition. I can't find any specs. on the F/pin or striker. The F/pin can be heard sliding back and fourth in the bolt which is normal. I have chambered empty primed rounds, aimed down fired and nothing, no primer dimple, I aim up the striker slides back pull the trigger and bang it fire, with a good deep dimple in the primer. The F/pin protrusion out of the front of the bolt is good and unrestricted, and the head space is ok. This is a 66 Centennial Model, no cross bolt safety and no rebounding hammer. I am at witts end on this one if anyone has a solution to my problem I sure would appreciate any input. Silverhair, (and getting grayer)

Sounds like a broken firing pin. When pointed up the hammer blow sends it down thw bolt with enough speed to put off the primer. When pointed down , no contact with the striker in the locking slide theus no fire. Just my .02, somebody will be along with the proper measurements of the firing pin.

New one on me. I've never encountered the need to make the attempt to fire at a downward angle that steep. My repair manual makes no mention of such an anomoly. Nor do I have any of my spare firing pins avail to measure.

On mine, with no case in the chamber it is flush, with a fired case it is almost flush but with a live round it is protruding.

Welcome to the forum.

It's either a broken, too short or incorrect firing pin. With a primed case in the chamber the firing pin should be flush or protruding from the rear of the bolt.

I have spares I can measure if you can wait till tomorrow.

Here is a pic of what the firing pin should look like. No measurements but I'll get that tomorrow.

Here's the specs I got when I measured one of my spare Post-64 firing pins:

Just for comparison here is a pic of the Pre-64, post-64, and AE firing pins:

As you can see, there is quite a bit of difference in them. I hope this helps. If you need more info I'll try to get it.

I am sure this isn't Your problem but I tore apart a Beretta TR1 ( single barrel 12 ga Trap ) for a friend that said it fired occasionally. What I found was the Firing Pin in 4 pieces. Had a hard time getting them lined up for a measurement which was 3/4 in. ordered a new one and it shoots like a charm.
Good luck with Yours. I might ask, have U had this Gun for a while and did it always work right before ?

Joe, I want to thank you for sending me the specs on the F/pin mine is about .044 short, I temporally glued a .044 shim on the end of the F/pin and chambered a primered round and the striker protruded back toward the hammer perfect, I have a new pin on order This gun was used when I got it so there is no telling what was done to it.
