Okay, made it to the range today

Post by kimwcook »

I was finally able to get to the range today to shoot my Christmas present, an Uberti '73 sporting rifle in 38-40.
Image
I had a box of ammo from CCC Ammo, semi-jacketed 180 gr. RNFP.
Image
I decided to start shooting at the 50 yd. line. My first five shot group was low and left of the six o'clock hold I was using.
Image
I raised the rear sight one notch on the elevator as it was all the way down and drifted it right a little. I then shot another five shot group. It moved up, but wasn't far enough up or right. Not a bad group for a guy with failing (insert getting old) eyesight.
Image
I raised the sight another notch and drifted the front sight to the left.
Image
I was finally able to get close enough for now as I'll be reloading for it soon and I won't be using this ammo.
I was cleaning the bore after every five shot group and man was that stuff dirty.
Image
I then broke out my Sharps.
Image
Image
I just started loading BP cartridges for it and this was the second time I'd been out to the range shooting it. I'd only shot five rounds before. Just to see how it did.
The first rounds I loaded so all grease grooves were covered, but I was ringing a little lead. I then pushed the grains up and loaded it with one groove showing.
Image
I fired about 20 rounds and here's my last three shot group shot in a row without blowing or wiping. The small round isn't a part of mine, but the bullet blew off the paster.
Image
Again this is at 50 yds. Not that big a feat, but I was just seeing how things went. It'll get better as I get more experience and fine tune my loads. I've got a MVA tang sight, but I didn't have it mounted as I'm trying to see how the bbl. sights do for hunting. The bullets I'm using are 550 grs. from Griers Hard Cast. I don't know if they're still in business. I bought them about 8 years ago and never got around to loading any up. Their lubed with SPG by Griers.
The cases are new Starline and annealed at the necks. The shot cases look like they made a good seal.
Image
I then went over to the 25 yd. range and shot my S&W 46 with some CCI green tag. The sights aren't what I'd call target, they're more like combat. Didn't take any pictures because there were to many people. Anyway had a day at the range which I haven't done for a long time. The '73 was a hoot to shoot. Can't wait to get some components and load some cast for it. The Sharps is coming along. Just need more development and practice. I've always loved the Sharps, but the Uberti is going to be a fun one to play with.

Just grab up the guns and went alone. That's why there's no pics of me shooting. Oh, I forgot. I took this pic right after shooting my last round. Just so you guys know I was actually shooting black.

Plus, here's a shot of the first wet patch through after shooting a shot. Man that stuff is dirty. :D

Great to see you were able to get out and shoot, Rihmfire. It was about 37F here today which made for very cool day of shooting. No pun intended. I was out shooting for about three hours and by the time I got back to the car I was ready for the heater.

Kim,

I gotta say... you sure picked a great rifle in a superb caliber for a Christmas gift. And it looks to be a great shooter to boot! Tho' and forgive me as I'm not used to seein' it... what's those white splotches on the ground... Looks like someones usin' oversized patches... that don't seem to get very dirty! It was 80 here in Texas yesterday, 73º today... overcast, lovely day to go to the range... but I'm stuck over a 100 miles from home; don't look like it'll happen this weekend!

PS; yep those '73s are sure addictive!!!

Griff, I think I'm really going to like shooting the 38-40. It was a bit cool to spend three plus hours at the range, but the wind wasn't out of hand. Just a slight breeze. The white stuff on the ground is snow and garbage. Looks like some kids came out and shot a bunch of 22LR. There were pop cans and stuff laid out all over perforated with 22 size holes. Then they neglected to pick it up. I'd love to be out there when this happened, but it seems I can never catch'em. Drives me nuts. Most people won't even take their targets down when their done per range rules. In fact it was three of these such targets that I used for my shots instead of mine. I really hope to get to the range more this year as I have a number of rifles to formulate loads for. Hope you and everyone else can make it to the range more this year.

Law Dawg,
Ain't that a nice way to spend the day? :D Especially when everything works out and your shootin' irons are running like greased lightning. :D

You will really like your 38-40. After I discoved it back in the early eighties, "some" of my 44-40's are gathering dust. About 200 rounds loaded with 8 grains of Unique and a 180 gr. cast and you are set for a day of pleasure. The 38-40 is also great with the 200 cast 40 S&W bullet.

Blackpowder? Eeehhhh.... Its great but its not my cup of tea. I have adult A.D.D. which gives me little patience, so baby--------give me the smokeless!! :D -----------Sixgun

Man, I envy you. Worked six straight away from home and so busy this weekend I just couldn't get out. Back on the road tomorrow! Two very lovely rifles there and both shooters by the looks of it. Well done!

Cheers,

Was wondering where your range is looks like concrete benches, A pard lived at Soap lake for quite some time Maybe you ran into him. Dale Brammer also lived in Ephrata and lake View. Worked construction, roofing, in summer time for Perty Co scrap box cars. He shot a lot of cast. Gary

Hi, Gary. The range is just outside Ephrata. It's called the Boyd Mordhorst Range and they have both concrete tables and wood top. Never met Mr. Brammer. I don't socialize a lot and the people I usually meet aren't the ones you want to. I work in Ephrata and drive through Lakeview every day going to and from work.
