Need 30/30 load for H335 and the 170gr C/L

Post by kooz »

Looking for a 30/30 load for H-335 and 170gr Cor-Lokt bullets. I went to all my usual sources but am coming up short for this particular combination. Any data you guys could provide would be appreciated. Thanks

From Hodgdons 2010 Annual Manual:

Bullet 170gr Sierra FP Dia: .308" COL: 2.550"

Powder:H335
Start Load: 27.5....Vel: 1934....Pressure: 29,000CUP
Max Load: 30.5.....Vel: 2086....Pressure: 36,300CUP

Since you'll be using the Remington bullet, just start at the bottom and work up.

Yea, I know the usual deal start low and work up. There is a big difference between bullet manufactures max load data for the 170gr bullet and H335, ranging from 29gr-34gr. I assume that there is a lot of variance in the crimp groove location and therfore seating depth between the different manufactures bullets and that this is largely the reason for the big difference in listed maximum loads. I dont have a selection of 170gr bullets in front of me, so I cannot verify this, so I was looking to save some time by finding someone that was already using this specific combination and see where they ended up at.

kooz,

There is actually very little difference between the different brands and the location of the crimp groves. Notice the COAL, it's 2.550". This is very close to the same COAL that DuPont and IMR listed for the 170gr Remington SPCL bullet.

As for the variations in load data it's all due to different guns, lots of components, testers, labs, the phase of the moon, and so forth.
I don't worry about it. Been doing this too long to get my knickers in a bunch cos the data don't agree.
