OT- Colt .38-200

Post by 2ndovc »

I got a nifty birthday present from my Dad this year.

This Colt Official Police .38-200 (.38 S&W).
Has some nice British proofs and one I don't recognize. It's a Crown with a W in it @ 3/16" tall. Have to look that one up.
Finish is worn but mechanically it's perfect.
Can't wait to shoot it. :D

The shells in the picture are WWII vintage British surplus 200 gr FMJs.

Very nice! I like that frame size. Cheap to load for too.

Startled me.

I figured .30-30 = 30 caliber, 30 grains of black powder, .32-20 = 32 caliber, 20 grains of black powder, . 45-70 = 45 caliber, 70 grains of black powder.

When you said .38-200, I'm thinking...

Pretty neat gift Jason. :D I read that the 38-200 was a decent manstopper as the bullet was intended to tumble upon hitting as it was barely stabilized during flight.

As you know, the 38-200 is the 38 S&W with a heavier bullet. You ought to grab a few boxes of factory stuff while its still available---for the brass.

I never did like using cut down 38 Spl brass for the few 38 S&W's I had---------------Sixgun

This is a perennial subject on the Colt forum. It can be confusing. I wrote up something for the grandson to keep it straight.

Brass is available from Starline and maybe still from Remington-Peters. I've never used cut down 38 special brass, but I have used a lot of .358" 158gr LRN with reasonable accuracy.

I figured .30-30 = 30 caliber, 30 grains of black powder,
Howdy

Not quite. The 30-30 was designed as a Smokeless cartridge from the beginning. It was 30 grains of the new bulk Smokeless powder. 30-30 does not perform very well with Black Powder. Dunno how much it takes to fill it, but I suspect it is a lot more than 30 grains. I regularly put around 35 grains in 44-40 and 45 Colt and they don't have the capacity of a 30-30.
I don't know where we're going but there's no sense being late.

I've got a bunch of .38 S&W stuff. I used to have several Webleys and a couple other Smiths chambered for
.38 S&W. Fun round and a couple of them were darned accurate.

Can't wait to start casting some of those.
