OT- WRA M1s are now available
For those of you who are interested CMP now has a large quantity of Service Grade WRA Garands available for $795. Winchester manufactured US M1s are highly sought after and usually bring much more at gun shows and on-line sites. Yes, it's $200 more than the SA rifles, but they are genuine Winchester receivers, other parts may vary.

Better get that Winchester while you can boys, they won't last long. I'd like one myself, but I'm tapped out.

Somebody can have mine.
Winchester M1s are IMO not as desirable as SA or HRA flavors of M1 Rifle because Winchester did not pay as close attention to fit and finish. Winchester M1 are generally significantly rougher in appearance w.r.t. tool marks, etc., than SA and HRA guns. The Winchester name has not had that big a pull for me at any time; don't misread that -- they did and do make nice commercial firearms for the most part. In fact, out of dozens of guns I have just three Winchesters -- my late father's 94, an NRA Commemorative Musket 94, and a rebuilt '95 in 30-06 with birds-eye furniture. But I have no interest in a rough Winny M1.

Might as well face it, you're addicted to guns . . .
Re: OT- WRA M1s are now available
Thanks Mike. I should have snagged 'em when I had the chance ten years ago. My buddy got 'em all in "collecter grade" for a song--6 or 7 c-notes? He kept telling me the supply was drying up. The years went on, he kept bugging, and I snoozed.
What I'm seeing now in the last several years are beat up junk with every part replaced. But then again I don't pay a lot of attention to what is really there and I might be wrong on that.
I only have one WW2 rifle--a very crispy specimen of a Smith Carona 03A3 with the 6 groove rifling--one of the first few thousand made that had Savage barrels. That rifle shoots cast bullets.
Thats enough to scratch the itch.

It's a very real possibility that a WRA M1 you buy from the CMP could be a Winchester receiver with no other Winchester parts at all. They will most likely all be mixmasters.

Exactly. I'd say the chances of getting an all-Winchester M1 from the CMP is about a billion to one. And an M1 with a Winchester receiver and mixed parts for everything else really doesn't have any collector value as a "Winchester M1."TedH wrote:It's a very real possibility that a WRA M1 you buy from the CMP could be a Winchester receiver with no other Winchester parts at all. Anything close to an all correct Winchester gun will be put up for auction. They won't let any slip through the normal cracks.
Re: OT- WRA M1s are now available
What people will do is buy the guns and find the parts and then sell it as a correct Winchester...
I understand the collector who "needs" one but for me the SA gun is just fine.

I have no need to purchase "WRA" M1; It was my intention only pass the word to those who might be interested. In the original post I did state that you would only get a genuine Winchester receiver, but not a complete WRA rifle. My Service Grade SA M1 is in excellent condition, as are the other two I purchased some months ago. Good enough for me.

Re: OT- WRA M1s are now available
Thank you for passing the word Mike! I'm more than happy with my service grade Springfields but it's nice to know the option is once again available.
What I'm looking forward to is possible M1903 availability next year and I hope that someone will post of that if/when it happens.
Cheers,
Oly

Not to worry, I receive e-mail updates from the DCM every time they have changes in their offerings. I will pass the info forward when it comes in.olyinaz wrote:Thank you for passing the word Mike! never thought I'd see they day when a rifle i trained with in the U.S. Army would enjoy such an elevated status amongst riflemen...a great rifle to say the least.
