“Yesteryears” Early Hunting Pictures Of Yourself.
Doe Season, December 1987
I was 26 years old in this picture.
This is one of the earliest I have of myself.
I think my parents may have some older ones than this.
My Dad and I took many a Deer, Squirrel and grouse in these woods.
Unfortunately and sadly it is now an upscale housing development.

This was 1984, and me at the age of 14. This was the first deer I had killed with my bow. It was on opening day of the season, 10-01-84. The other buck I killed 9 days into the rifle season in the middle of Nov. It was a good year for me.

Ted, do you recall what that bumper sticker on the window said in that shot with your rifle kill?

We raised cattle. The sticker was a knock off of the McDonalds jingle "You deserve a break today", and it said "You deserve a STEAK today".RSY wrote:Ted, do you recall what that bumper sticker on the window said in that shot with your rifle kill?

Don't have any hunting pictures. How bout trapping pictures?
Myself, Dad and brother -around 1960. The black dog was supposed to be my dog, but he was really Dad's dog.
Me pulling a beaver out-1964
Me with beaver in 1968. This picture was printed on the cover of The American Trapper magazine. That is a Herter's canoe, which I have now.

Re: “Yesteryears” Early Hunting Pictures Of Yourself.
Never hunted anything but feral dogs that kept attacking our sheep, and groundhogs that kept tearing up our garden, until I was about 15, and a neighbor told me the groundhogs were good to eat, too. Then I started actually 'hunting' them a bit. Didn't deer hunt until I was probably in my mid-30's.
So, this isn't a 'hunting' picture, but it dates back to the era when I was starting to hunt groundhogs...

Ted,
He was a big one. Shot it in Hobie's neck of the woods. Not sure how true live weight estimates are but he had been eating acorns, and his stomach had a bussel basket full. Estimate live weight was #710. He is mounted on a grissly form. squared over 8 feet. I ate bear for two years.

Funny thing, I have plenty of pics but have no idea what I did with 'em. Ain't easy getting fifty-some years old. Well, this is the only one that I could find.
Centre County, Pa. 1978 when I was 24. Buck & fox and............drum roll please.............the rifle was my 1886 in .33 WCF. See, I was using these old leverguns when many here were still in their diapers. -----------Sixgun

Here is a picture from 8 or 9 years ago. The buck was taken just before dusk one evening with an original 1886 Winchester in 45-70. The rifle dates to 1893.

Deer camp from 1984:
Partner & his Blazer
1984 was the last year we could drive up to this camp. Jan 1985 found President Reagan signing over this former ranch and leased Forest Service land into "Wilderness Zone" status forbidding vehicle or mechanical travel; even tho' roads were there, improved and maintained by the Forest Service, along with buildings. Clearly in violation of the Act that allowed establishment of Wilderness Zones. And, then in violation of the conditions of the Wilderness Zone, during the archery season in 1988 they flew in new girders and concrete mixing equipment to build a new bridge over the Kern River so the John Muir Trail would remain viable thru this new "wilderness zone" after the old bridge suffered flood damage in 1986 & 7.
This neat valley sits at 9200' and is about a mile wide and 3 miles long. It sits along a major trail used by deer from the higher elevations to the southern end of Owens valley for wintering. In hunting there for 7 out of 10 years, I learned that it doesn't take a great hunter; but does require the luck to be in the right place at the RIGHT time. That one was the biggest buck I've ever taken, both rack and body. Estimated live weight 225lbs, 3x4 with 26" between the beams.
Although most of the road was great, and the weather was short sleeve 65ºF during the day; one spot had snow drifted over the road that took us 5 hours to clear 100yards of 6' drifts. I hunted this area with my pards (4 person party hunt draw) in '81, '82, '84, '85, '86, '87 & '89.

Black bear is very good to eat. is very marbled, a bit stringy. I also rendered the bear fat and used the oil for years.

In those days I was much more aggressive in running the old 86's. That buck was taken with a stout load of IMR 3031 and a 350 gr jacketed bullet. I have since completely sworn off jacketed bullets, gone exclusively to cast and have worked up some loads with 5744 and Varget. Varget has proven to be very useful, providing near case filling charges, consistent velocities and with advertised pressures less than the commonly stated 28,000 psi max.
Good shooting,

Re: “Yesteryears” Early Hunting Pictures Of Yourself.
Excuse the photo quality folks circa 1982 I think - this is my first rifle shot feral Goat. I used my Dads M1906 Winchester pump action .22 rim-fire. Inadequate, but it did the job. My Dad handed me down this rifle. A Scumbag stole this rifle from me in a burglary in the mid 90's
I note that at least as late as 1982 that Camo was not needed and that medium game had not toughened up to the point that a Loudenboomer was required

Re: “Yesteryears” Early Hunting Pictures Of Yourself.
Took me a while to dig these out.
The first photo is the one and only pheasant I shot on my first hunt at 7 years old. My shotgun was a full sized Rem 870 Wingmaster with a 28" full choke v/r barrel. I had never shot it before that day. Trial by fire sorta...
First hunt on my own - dropped off at a West Texas ranch with my 7 yr old cousin - I was 11 - and told to shoot one each with horns and they'd come back for us at the end of the day. I happened to pick a buck that scores 85+ SCI for my first animal (easily surpassed the book minimum of 82). The rifle is the same one I use today, Ruger 77 with custom Douglas barrel in 7mm Rem Mag.
