Marlin 35 Remington Question

Post by Bullard4075 »

Years ago I used a friend's Marlin 35 Rem to hunt and kill a deer. Nothing remarkable about that , it's just that I
still remember the "ease" of the whole experience. Recently a friend gifted me two big boxes of stuff. Included was
dies ,empty cases and bullets for a 35 Remington. I feel the need for a 35. I would like to find an older Marlin ,one I can put
a scout scope or red dot on. The eyes are not what they were! Anything I should look for or be careful of with the Marlins?
Any good or bad years. I would like an older one.

I'm no expert, but I saw an older one, and the barrel was quite thin. I prefer my carbine (2006).

The ones made around 79 and 80 seemed particularly smooth from my experience.

I bought a used one and pretty much just looked at the crown (good). Surface rust and wood dings, but it's a 2"/100yd shooter with a good scope. I put a Williams FP on it and 'ghost ringed' it with the factory front gold bead, and it is now a 4" shooter, but that's obviously my eyes, not the gun.

Mine is 15 years old or so, and bought brandy-new.

It has the cross-bolt safety.

I put a Williams peep sight on it with a fire sight front sight.
I'll probably replace the front sight with a Skinner blade at some point.
I don't care for the factory sights.

The trigger is just fine for a field gun - the cognescenti might
prefer a lighter pull, but it seems to break cleanly.

I did - once - shoot a 1.5" group at a measured 100 yards with this gun
with Remington factory 200 gr. CoreLokt ammunition.

Wood is nice, but not spectacular. Same for the blueing.

Hope this helps you make your choice. I'm a big fan of both
the Marlin 336 AND the 35 Remington. Great combination!!

336 in 35 remmy is a goodun. I am no expert but, all I have seen were very accurate and reliable as a rock. Don't forget about cast bullets in them. My 336 likes my cast bullets better than jacketed.

That's unusual.... Cast doesn't usually go well out of micro-groove. Maybe it's the gas check.
You know something...I've never even tried cast out of mine. Been shootin' it fer 51 years and never shot anything but the 200-gr. Core-Lokts. ~ Maybe it's time the old girl gets fed some real lead.

I have a '50 marlin 336A, but don't hunt it much due to the lack of TSX bullets in .35 cal. :(

I keep hearing about cast boolits and microgroove rifling not being compatable and every microgroove I have ever shot (except one finicky little so and so,,yep I bitter) with cast booloits gives very good accuracy and little to no leading. I size the bullets a little big and it just works for me, plus my reloads cost around 15-16 cents each. The one mentioned earlier doesn't like jacket bullets either...fincky persnickety, dadblasted,no good leverpiece ojunk thing. But it gives me a mission in life to get this thing to shoot so it ain't all bad. How much is a barrel for a Marlin???? :o Tom

We have two Seventies vintage Marlin 35 Remingtons. One is near new and the other has had considerable use but still in excellent shape. Both shoot my 180 gr FPGCs just as accurately as any 200 gr JRNs.
Excellent rifles that neither I or Kid#2 ever plan on parting with.

Some cast bullets which wouldn't chamber in my 35. They were blunt-nosed pistol bullets, 180 fp and 158 SWC. Round nose are ok, although none of them are that accurate. I went back to jacketed 200's. Remington ammo is great in that gun.

I am a big fan of the Marlin 336 and the 35 Remington combination. I do not know how to post a link so here is what I wrote about it on another website.
"I know I am not old but I am not as young as I once was. As I age I find that I am far more prone to hunt with guns that have that "right feel" about them. I currently have ten guns that I classify as deer rifles. They range from stainless/synthetic bolt guns to my Marlins and a BLR in 358. For several years I thought that a real deer rifle had to be a bolt gun with the ability to reach out across a clearcut or down a gasline for several hundred yards while shooting as flat as a string. The passing of time has brought me back into the woods and creek bottoms where shots are more likely to be well under a hundred yards. It is this love of the close range woods that has driven me back to the lever actions that I once considered out dated and to cartridges I once thought of as anemic and barely able to take a deer. I had a wonderous affair with the BLR in 358 that brought me back to the lever gun. It is a TREMENDOUS combination that I have used to kill between fifteen to twenty deer. But even with such success I have found some thing that just feels better in my hands. My Marlin 336 in 35 Remington is now my favorite deer rifle. I have only been able to kill seven deer with it but the results have been very predictable and satisfying. The average distance traveled has been less than 25 yards after taking a 200gr Core-lock from a handload that includes AA2230. This combination simply works! I finally realised that a gun is carried a lot more than it is shot and the Marlin carries well. Since I now have acknowledged that my least expensive deer gun IS my favorite I have upgraded the scope to a Leupold VX-III 2.5 -8x. I realize that the top end magnification is more than is necessary but I have three more of these on other rifles and find that they are just about perfect for my style of hunting. They can be turned up for sessions at the range or left down low for hunting in the woods. I wish that eveyone who hunts had a combination that worked as well for them as this does for me. The 35 Remington hits with authority without a large dose of recoil . And when properly applied behind the shoulder a deer is not long for this world. What more could I ask for?"

I have a 336sc that my father passed on to me and I passed it on to my son. It shoots 2" groups at 100yds and even though it"s my sons gun now I still steal it to go to the range and when we go coyote hunting it's almost as good as a shotgun! I love the gun and it will always be in our family.

According to Veral Smith the Marlin Microgrove barrel is as close as you can get to a Harry Pope Barrel today. They will shoot tight fitting cat bullets just fine.

[Anything I should look for or be careful of with the Marlins?]

In terms of difficulty, buying a good Marlin .35 is right up there with finding a good cuppa joe.

As long as one's not rusted solid, and "MARLIN" is spelled correctly on the rifle, I'd say you'll be good to go.
