OT Shot my class project this last weekend
I took my class project to the cabin this last weekend and tried it out. It's not completed yet but close enough to shoot. Shot one, three shot group that measured 5/8" at fifty yards. Forty grains of fffg Goex with a .395 ball. I still need to play with some more loads and adjust the sights a little before squirrel season.

OH MY, TOO COOL, A LEFT HAND SMALL BORE ML !!! I HAVE KILLED MANY SQUIRRELS WITH A 35CAL MZ AND A TON OF GROUNDHOGS ALSO NOW THAT I THINK ABOUT IT. MOST FOLKS DO NOT REALIZE WHAT A TRUE KILLER A ROUND BALL FROM A MZ REALLY IS, IN SPADES. IT HAS WHAT I CALL THE SPLASH EFFECT AND IS A KILLER ON MAN OR BEAST. THE 36CAL C&B PISTOLS WERE FAR MORE EFFECTIVE THAT THE 38SPL REVLOVER THAT CAME ALONG 60 YEARS LATER. THIS IS FROM THE TESTIMONY FROM MEN WHO HAD KILLED OTHER MEN WITH BOTH STYLES OF WEAPONS; THE 36 DID IT LOTS BETTER/QUICKER. WITH NEARLY ANY CENTER HIT THE FIGHT WAS GONE FROM YOUR OPPONENT.

Aleft handed locked muzzleloader. Thats just to cool. I dreamed of being able to buy one back in the 70's when i was young and broke. Here's to many a fun hunting trip with it
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Now, there is nothing not to like about that little mountain rifle! Simply elegant, and I especially like the greasehole treatment.
Isn't it wonderful how a ML smallbore can shoot?!

That is a beautiful rifle, a true example of craftsmanship. Excellent target too. I doubt that this is your first effort.

Re: OT Shot my class project this last weekend
Please, do tell us more on this class project. That rifle is stunning!
Re: OT Shot my class project this last weekend
Thanks for the compliments on the rifle guys. The class was at The Log Cabin Shop in Ohio. The instucters were Ian Pratt and Jim Kibler. You can see there work on the contemporarymakers.blogspot.com lots of muzzleloaders and accouterments. You can also do a search fo Brian Barker and see items that I make.
The barrel is by Rice, wood from Dunlap woodcrafts and the lock is part Chambers and a couple parts I made. All the furniture and set triggers I made from scratch. The class was once a month for eight months and cost $125 plus parts which can vary greatly depending on the barrel, wood, trigger guard and butt plate you choose.

I'm impressed! Beautiful rifle. And you shot that target with a flinter? Wow...

If you like guns like these and live around Lexington Kentucky there is a show comming in august. The Contemporary Longrifle Association has a big show on August 20 and 21 in Lexington.
Re: OT Shot my class project this last weekend
HuminaHuminaHumina! That is beautiful. Did it start from a pre carve or did you carve it all? Either way, well done! I'm thinking about a Bean style East TN rife for my next Muzzleloader.

Re: OT Shot my class project this last weekend
I shaped the stock from a plank. I have done a couple of precarves but I don't care for them. You can't always get exactly what you want and the ramrod grooves aren't always where I want them.
