MH, nice cabin and time well spent being with your dad. Log cabins where rigging axes and chainsaw come alive. Drill a well and put in a solar pump enjoy the quiet that 45k can buy alot of neat fixtures. danny

MH - Wow, that is nice country. I envy you and Dad getting to work on a great project like this together, even though there's obviously a lot of hard work involved.

I'm also curious about the roof that someone else mentioned. Is that for heat relief, air flow ? - DixieBoy

My guess is that it is the roof over the front porch. Apparently the original builder wasn't going to have one. Smart move because when the snow piles up in front of the door it is hard to get out or in. Nice hunt'n shack Mich Hunter!

Congrats, that is a wonderful looking cabin and site. I just put down a deposit on a log cabin on only 7 acres, west of Gettysburg. I'm excited and it sounds like you are too. I share in your enthusiasm.

It is a roof for the porch. It is a weird design as I have never seen anything quite like it. Unfortunitly, the porch will not get started until the spring, but thats next in the project line. The big issue we faced this year was getting everything buttoned up so we could live out of it while working and keeping the bears and such out. It took longer than expected as we had to fix several issues as they came up. I am sure it will be a work in progress for many years to come, but it's a nice piece of heaven. Neither one of us are too worried about electricity. We were raised to be robust and the antique kero lanterns and some propane will keep us happy critters. Hell, when I was younger deer camp was a month long and you learned to take a bath by heating up water on the wood stove. The wifes family thinks were a bit off, but I never thought twice about it. The U.P. is a wonderful place. You can trout fish in the streams for fish in the big lakes. And I have never met an unfriendly person up there. Hell, I even still have pictures of my granfather working in the CCC camps when money was tight during the 20's and 30's. He used to hitch hike all the way from Saginaw.

Terry,

I have those pictures for you from San Antonio. I will have to stop by the house in a week or two and bring some snake juice  .

That is a really cool looking place you guys are building. I am very familiar with that part of Michigan, very nice country up by the Big Two Hearted River. Some of the roads up there like Rabbit patch Trail are off the hook for 4 wheeling. Rabbit Patch Trail is near Deer Park by the way.
I spent my week long vacation painting a 40x60 ft pole barn near East Jordan in the Northern Lower.

Well it looks like the black flies didn't chase away , so it must be in a good spot. A couple 100 gal tanks of LP will last a long time for lighting and cooking needs. My buddy's place in northern WI has a large out house with half it for a generator room. He wired his cabin for AC and ended up picking up a old generator from a resort looks to be a old flat head four cyclinder Ford engine. He starts the generator from the cabin by flipping on a breaker in the breaker box. He doesn't use it much but it's nice to have. Your going to have a great place.
