Need Marlin Guide Gun advice

Post by Bigahh »

I have been thinking about a 45-70 for some time now, well low and behold my local gun shop just got in a like new Marlin 1895M? Guide gun in 450 Marlin. This is almost what I have been looking for. The gun is ported, and I can pick it up for 400.00, It currently has a large carry handle on it a 3x9 Burris which I can leave on for an additional 100.00, but it will come off if I decide to buy it. my questions are this..

1. Due to the porting will this gun be excessively loud?
2. Is the price reasonable? I have never priced them

Hold out for a .45-70.

Sorry for the blunt answer friend. I had to go do my chores before the boss (wife) got home.
I met a guy at the gun club who had one (note HAD ! ). He bought it in a store on Kodiac Island, AK . He paid $950 for it new.
I guess it depends on where you are if thats a deal or not.
He shot it once and sold it. Too LOUD, Too much for ammo, Kicks too much!! ( his words, not mine)
He was shooting a Marlin 336 Sporting Carbine in .32 special that day and he kept his empties (DARN !!) :x

Personally, I like the ports on my 1895GS and haven't noticed any increase in noise as I usually tend to stand behind the rifle when firing it and not off to one side. I'd wait on a .45-70. They can be loaded up to .450 velocities and don't require a special case. I shy away from any firearm that required a special type of cartridge. As for the kick, it's not more than a 12 ga. shotgun. More of a shove than a kick, unless you get sloppy and forget to tuck it in nice a tight then you will get a not so gentle reminder.
If you can see the big picture, you are not focusing on your front sight.

Just dont shoot it on your porch or close to the house Mojo, it'll rock your world them ports if theres a wall next to you.

Its louder I think but guns are loud anyway. I just dont like the holes & dont think they really serve a purpose.

As far as calibre 45/70 is more versatile unless you handload, then its almost a toss up except for brass.

I dont know if thats a good price or not but I paid more for my guide gun in 1999.

I personally HATE ported rifles. shoot next to one a few timnes and you'll see. if you aren't concerned with the welfare of others around you get one.

At our range I tend to use foam ear plugs AND hard shell hearing protectors over them. A ported 450M next ot me nearly gave me concussion headaches and was still ringing my ears, though NOT as bad as a 300 or 7mm Mag with one.

The price, to me, doesn't seem to far out of line if the gun is like new.

Heck they want almost that much for a used Marlin 336 around here.

I'd wait, but if you like it, get it and if the ports are too loud snip it back to trapper length and besides, you can load your own.....There's just SO much more load choices for the 45-70....

My ported Guide Gun never bothered me - and no animals ever lived to complain about it, either !
I wasn't exactly concerned about their welfare, either.
I never worried about loudness on the range - since everyone's supposed to wear ear protection, anyway.

I personally have no use for the .450M, after owning one for a year, much preferring a .45-70, but YMMV.

45:70

Post by brucew44guns »

I bought a new Guide Gun, un-ported in 45:70, in summer of 2007. Paid 462.00 for it brand new. I'm pleased to own it, and glad I chose unported and 45:70.
