? / Help on a Rossi 357

Hi guys !

I just bought a used Henry lever 22 used in nice shape for 200.00 and I love it ! Now the same shop has a Rossi 357 w/o the top saftey. It is in decent condition, a few scratches on the receiver etc

He will not take less than 300.00 for it as hard as I have tried ! I know I can buy a new one for under 400.00 but I really dont want to got hat high. If I buy the 300.00 one there is no tax, shipping or whatever.

If I buy this am I paying too much ?

$300 for a presafety in good shape is a very good deal IMO. Be sure to post some pics when you get it home.

Not sure what Blue Book is, but I can tell you that $300 for a pre-safety Rossi '92 in good shape would be a fine deal in Tucson. When you factor in the no tax and no shipping or FFL fee it sounds like it'll be gone before you can get back there to buy it!

cvcman - A few things.............

First, Welcome to the campfire - pull up a stool, and make nice. We'd like to have you set a spell.

Second, Don't jump to conclusions - you can rest assured that Ted knows EXACTLY what a "Blue Book" is. I'm sure he was alluding to the fact that he didn't know the BB VALUE for your rifle, off the top of his head.

Third, $300 for ANY .357 Model 92 is a score, whether you realize it or not - even your bolt-safety model.

Fourth, don't take those internet low prices for gospel - once shipping, FFL fees, and any local municipal charges & taxes are added in, another $150 +/- can easily be added to that "$400" figure, the reason many jump on .357's for $450-$500, nevermind $300.

1) welcome to the fire.
2) buy the rifle - the lack of the stupid wing safety is reason enough and $300 from a shop where you can fondle it and inspect prior to purchase is a very fair price.
3) check this http://www.ammoman.com/index.htm The prices shown are shipped - kinda like Bud's. $18 per 50 shipped is a good price. Buy brass cased ammo so you can save the brass.
4) after you get a good quantity of brass, purchase a basic handloading set-up and handload - your cost per box of 50 will drop to around $8.

+1. And, I don't think you'll find a new one @ $400. MSRP is currently $536, discount into the mid-$400's. And you have to deal with the new-fangled safety.

Is ammoman all 500 rounds or larger ? I dont see the boxes of 50 ?

Yes, but you'll want to be careful. I'd bevel the end so there's no sharp edge.

Can't really answer that... wood shrinkage; someone had a tang sight on it and left the screw; any number of possiblities.

If it does not interfere with anything I would leave it in case you decide you want a tang sight at a later date.

IF I were you. I wouldn't get the Rossi. Sounds like it has a lot of problems and you will probably never be really happy with it. Go with a nice premium bolt action rifle with a large scope, neat sling, in one of those super short magnums. Also study what everyone has to say about some of the semi-auto rifles as well. You may like them more. Have an interesting day.

There's better qualified folks than I to answer... but, if it were only a thread or two... I'd probably "live widit!" If it were several threads to about 1/8", I'd probably use my bench grinder; AFTER I made sure I have the right die to chase the threads. I'd thread the die "backwards" before I started grinding so that I could be assured of not cross-threading. IME, the first few threads lways get messed up and need to be recut. This method has saved me having to buy a new bolt/screw in the past. Doesn't work with really short threaded sections, in those cases all I can say is to be very careful not to get the metal hot enough that the metal gets distorted. That will help getting the die started so it doesn't cross-thread the rest of the threads.

Longer than an 1/8", I hacksaw off and then dress up the end on the bench grinder.

Maybe some of the "not-so-shadetree" types have other techniques.

I usually thread just a regular nut or two onto a bolt I'm going to shorten, then use a Dremel cutting wheel or hacksaw for the cut, leaving maybe 1/16" extra. THEN, I chuck it in a drill or drill press, and apply a Dremel grinding wheel carefully while the bolt is turning in the drill/press; that assures a very uniform and flat or rounded tip as desired. Taking the nut off pretty much trues up the threads pretty well, then I'll sometimes use a Arkansas stone to polish off the very edge/end of the threads if needed.

You probably already have the "correct" screw, as my Rossi 357 has the same condition you describe. Mine doesn't stick through enough to bother me or cause any problem, and I may some day want a tang sight, in which case it would be just right.
