A long talk over an emptying bottle...

Post by Old Ironsights »

Mr Formby & I had a long talk over a bottle of his finest trying to discover just what the heck some yahoo slathered all over my 99C.

It took a WHOLE BOTTLE to get the gunk stripped off. The wood sucked up 3 coats of Teak Oil after I was done.

The varnish on the action wasn't even touched by soaking for a WEEK in kerosene. Fortunately, Formbys doesn't destroy Bluing, so I was able to dissolve 99.9% of it without resorting to anything harsher than 00000 copper wool.

So, as soon as I take delivery of the correct forearm screw, grip cap, and grip cap screw from Numrich ( ) I'll have a relatively decent shooter on my hands...

I'm glad you have something to do with your evenings...

It looks much better now.

Few things to "fix" still...

Had to order a new grip cap & screw, as well as a forearm screw because the ones mounted on it were wrong (you can see the forearm screw protruding).

Also, the top screw holding in the White-Line doesn't. It has almost no threads. :? So I have to figure out how to replace that.

But the Lyman 57SB sure works better than that... thing... that was on it before.

I immediately thought of another type of bottle ....................... but the bottle you used appears to have done you a lot more good than a bunch of Lynchburg lemonades !

If the white line screw is for the buttpad you could glue in a dowel and make a new hole.
That 57 sure looks good! Stock look 1000% better too.

Yeah, it's for the buttpad, but the screw itself is lacking in threads. I'd say there's maybe only 1/100th bite vs the bottom screw which has 3/100th (SWAG).

Now it is the rifle's turn to show you some love by putting some holes in a target. Hope it shoots the bullseye out for you.

I realize you said the screw itself is the one with little or no threads but after you figure that out you will probably need to fill the hole in the buttstock also. I use wooden golf Tee's using a Qtip push a little glue in the hole and then tap a golf t in place let dry and saw flush works great. Just a thought for later. (I had to do it to my 99 because the buttplate was loose too! Mine also had a thinner thread on the upper screw than the lower so it may be factory)Tom
