OT - D-Day

Post by gak »

Remembrance and thanks for those that made the ultimate sacrifice 66 years ago--and before and since--and for those who thankfully made it home.

I always watch Saving Private Ryan and The Longest Day on June 6. Now I have to add Band of Brothers as well.

At the time, June 6, 1944, I was 6 years old.
My earliest memories were of the war and the war effort.
I thought I was a Douglas Dauntless dive bomber until I was twelve.
Most of the US knew and understood the sacrifice that was expected of us to enable our troops to triumph over the Axis forces.
Not many, including our elected leaders, understand what our troops were fighting and dieing for during WWII.

My god-father, Sgt Wm. T. Boyer, landed in the gliders. He was 35 years old at the time, and he never said much. about WW II. I often think that he -- like I do of my time in Vietnam -- asked himself "how and why did I survive?"....

He was a great guy and even though he's been gone over 30 years, I still miss him. Soft and safe be thy resting place.
The most important aspect of this signature line is that you don't realize it doesn't say anything significant until you are just about done reading it & then it is too late to stop reading it....

Didn't see much mention of it here, except, in of all places, the Sunday comics. :x

My uncle (my Dad's brother) was in the 29th ID, 116th, Company F. He hit "Omaha Beach" that morning, and was one of the few of his company to survive that day. He made it through the entire war, and is one of the few (again) still with us today. Truly, the greatest generation...

We talked about it at home today as well. My daughter (just finished 2nd grade) had heard the term "D-Day", but didn't know what it meant (and didn't remember our previous conversations on it). My son (Y2K; just finished 6th grade) told her a lot about it, and it was right! I'm not sure whether he learned any of it in school though, or just from listening to me and doing his own reading.

Like Tom said,I was 6 years old then and knew from all the talk what was going on. I heard talk of it on Fox news early this morning as we got ready for church.
I wish our nation felt the same today as they did then.

From: Bill

http://vimeo.com/5645171

VJ Day, Honolulu Hawaii, August 14, 1945

About this video:
"65 Years Ago my Dad shot this film along Kalakaua Ave. in Waikiki capturing spontaneous celebrations that broke out upon first hearing news of the Japanese surrender. Kodachrome 16mm film: God Bless Kodachrome, right? I was able to find an outfit (mymovietransfer.com) to do a much superior scan of this footage to what I had previously posted, so I re-did this film and replaced the older version There are more still images from this amazing day, in color, at www.discoveringhawaii.com"

YK,

My did was a crewman on an LST during the invasion. There's a very good chance your uncle was on his LST.
Thankfully he made it home otherwise I wouldn't be here. But he died in 1980. He did not live long enough. I miss him to this day.

To those who served my sincerest thanks.

Joe

a neighborhood friend of my dad's, Robert Kangas (another Finn). Joined the paratroopers at some point, ended up in the 506th PIR, so he'd have made the D-Day jump. (the 506th Co E is the Band Of Brothers).

survived till 21 DEC 1944, battle of the bulge:
