45-70 CAST Bullet weights???????

Does anyone know of a manufacturer of CAST 45-70 bullets in the 200 grain range??

Several years ago, Lyman again offered its .45 "Collar Button" mould for the .45-70. It was a copy of the original armory mould for gallery shooting. IIRC, its weighed about 185 grains, and was designed for short range shooting -- approx. 25 yards or so.

I looked at the cast bullet sellers that I have "book marked" and the lightest bullet found was 300 grains.

I've read of and seen .45-70 shooters loading a round ball for short range plinking, but I don't know the details of the load.

What do you need a light bullet for?

Western Bullet has a 150gr. collar button bullet.

Frank at Mt. Baldy Bullets will make some up for you. You get to lube them though.

The lightest thing I could find in the current Lyman listings is 457191, which comes in barely under 300gr. http://www.lymanproducts.com/lyman/bull ... entryID=71

In discontinued designs, mould 457127 would fit the OP's requirements pretty nicely. Supposed to come in around 195 gr. Problem's going to be finding some bullets cast out of one or even the mould itself. I realize that isn't sounding very helpful, but I've heard of small commercial casters with old moulds and having the mould # might be helpful if you get into touch with the right one...

I read somewhere that the collar button bullet was originally designed to come in at about the same weight as a round ball. The attached pics would support that theory... I can tell you that the wasp-waisted shape of that bullet takes a lot of lube.

For years I used only 300 grain lead and jacketed bullets in my .45 caliber Winchesters, but now that lead is banned in Condor Land I shoot Barnes TSXs in 250 grains. That is ALL that you need to dispatch the ugliest hogs and the largest CA deer.
