ot-? Hw often do you guys clean your CCW?

Post by 2ndovc »

Several weeks ago I traded a big ole S&W model 21(that i rarely shot) for one of the new Sig P238s.

I was in need of a smaller carry piece than my Glock 26.

I carry the little .380 almost all the time now compared to the larger/thicker Glock that usually stayed in the truck.
Compared to the Glock though I find myself cleaning the dust, lint and debris out
of the hammer, ej port and slide much more often than the Glock. Twice a week at least.

Paranoid or precautious?
How much dirt, lint and stuff can the average pocket pistol take?

I carry a 1911 cocked and locked almost everyday and I don't get enough lint into the action enough to ever worry about, short of a major dust storm or working in the sand dunes.

I clean it when I think it is dirty. When I look at it and see 'stuff' in it I think it is dirty. It works. I carry revolvers now. Did the same with my 1911 pistols.

I have no answer to your questions as I don't believe in neglecting your weapon to find out just how much neglect it will stand. I don't keep a log, but I keep mine ready to go.

Charles,

By no means do I want to neglect my pistol. Just curious how often the guys that carry a gun
every day clean them.

I clean/lube my Kel-Tec(its usually what I carry)after I shoot it,then it is in my front pocket when I carry it.
I have gotten into the habit of each time I carry it,first thing that day,I drop the clip, rack open the chamber and take a blow(no spit)with muzzle pointing downward. Dont really get much of any dirt/just maybe some lint etc.that comes out rarely.Reinsert clip.
Keep in mind that when I carry it(I know you guys are going to yell at me  )I have 7 in the clip and the chamber is empty. So when I rack it first thing before carrying only bullets are in the clip.(yep, still treat it as if loaded)

I carry the same way. Empty chamber. I've practiced for years though.
Draw, rack, aim and squeeze.

I don't like having a chambered pistol in my pants!

Now if I know I'm heading into a "Danger zone" the pistol is cocked and locked but desn't happen that often.

Well Pards...

I've been carrying the same Ruger Security Six (SS-4") every day since the day I bought it in 1985. Obviously, it gets checked every day. But, it gets cleaned only when I shoot it. With the daily checkup it gets wiped down with an oily rag before it goes into the scabbard, ammo gets rotated weekly. If I find lint in the barrel, then it gets an oily patch.

The ammo......either Remington Golden Sabers or a load full of old Black Talons (old stock which I have in good supply).

Over cleaning will wear out the muzzle of a barrel.

That's why I carry a sixgun... it IS a perfected mechanical device. Totally inert until a dustup...then it comes alive, like a coiled rattler!

If'n Y'all like a semi-auto...more power to ya!

A pocket holster will prevent a lot of the link problem.

I've been looking at the 238 Equinox. Finding .380 ammo, for me, is the big issue.

Let me clarify my response. I don't carry any handgun in my pocket, if I can help it. I've only done that about twice. a S&W Bodyguard. I carry in holsters.

I'll tell you what works well for me. I carry an "always" gun which is a small autoloading pistol, (presently a N.A.A. Guardian .380, previously the same gun in .32 acp), in a pocket holster. Pocket carry is pretty bad about generating lint and grit in the hammer area. ( Carrying in a pocket holster pretty much protects most of the rest of the working parts). Daily, when I change from one pair of pants to another, I drop the mag, rack the slide and give everything a "once over" ck. for whatever needs a quick blow out. Pay special attention to the hammer area,
where trigger enters the frame, and bore area. This rarely takes over 20 seconds or so. I make it a habit to run 20 rounds or more through it every 4 to 6 months, both for practice and functioning, after which it recieves a complete cleaning. So far, so good for over 20 years now. Hope this helps. God bless. Slim.

With my Glock, I put it in the dishwasher field stripped and add Cascade Gel after I shoot it, about 8 times per year. Take it out and oil it where appropriate and run a moist patch through barrel. Done.

I carry my 1911 C/L inside the waistband with a ClipDraw (no holster). Since it is under my shirt a lot I do notice lint and dust on the firing pin protrusion and around the back of the slide/frame intersection. I just use some Q-Tips, dry it they get it all or throw in a moist one if I need to followed by dry one. I only field strip and clean more if I shot it, in which case I use a bore brush and wipe out the hole gun.

My Charter Arms Bulldog gets cleaned once per year whether I shoot it or not. I works perfectly with very little maintenance and doesn't need lube.

I have a Kahr PM40 that I carry daily - sometimes part of a day, sometimes with another gun, sometimes all day. I have it in a CrossBreed, in the pants with ClipDraw or in a front/jacket pocket loose. If I shoot it I field strip and clean it thoroughly. If it gets dirt, dust and lint built up I will just take the slide off and wipe it out - probably about once a month to once every 6 weeks.

I take no pleasure in cleaning guns. Some guys enjoy it but I can't stand it. This is one of the reasons for my handgun choices. I have proven to myself that these will work 100% with the minimal cleaning and maintenace I grudingly perform.

I don't clean rifles much either. I just "forget" them at Ricky's for a while. Miraculously they always come back clean!

my Seacamp .32 is carried in a pocket holster all the time. I clean it only when I fire it, and then only if I fire it alot. My revolvers get the same treatment. I clean them only when I fire them, sometimes a rag gets run over them, but rarely. My 1911 has been fired but not cleaned. Same thing with truck rifles/shotguns - the get a rag over them maybe weekly to get fingerprints off of them, and cleaned after lots of firing. Hunting rifles, get wiped down, but rarely cleaned during the season, only exceptions are BP firearms which get cleaned after any firing. I don't get any pleasure in cleaning them, but I don't want to handle a dirty gun so that is my measure. If it looks dirty, I clean it.

That's why I carry a Glock. I don't like the looks of it, I don't like the feel of the grip or how it points. Feels like there's a piece of Styrofoam stuck behind the trigger, too . I have plenty guns to work on. I don't have time to deal with a high maintenance gun. The only time I felt like it needed to be cleaned was the time I waded off into the surf with a cast net catching bait for my surf rods, but forgot to take it off. Two days later I shot it into my bullet trap before I cleaned it. It didn't stutter one time. I will add though, I had the slide NP3-ed and installed TFO (tritium fiber-op) sights.

I clean a gun usually about every 300 rounds. When I carried revolvers I paid more attention to them than I do autos now. I have had blue steel revolvers get wet and start rusting before I made it home. I carry a Glock now. If I shoot a couple IDPA matches wiht it I may take the gun apart, wipe it off, jab a chamber brush into the chamber a few times, and put a little new oil on it or I may not.

As far as pocket guns I always turn my pocket inside out and get all the lint out of it before I put my gun in there. I used to carry a Grendel that was a top loading 380. I once shot it after months of carry and lint was flying out of it but it ran fine.

It seems like most guns run just as well on a little oil as a lot and in a pocket a little is probably better.

A lot of the pocket lint problem can be resolved by using a proper pocket holster (that and emptying your pockets as above)

15 seconds with some compressed air once every week or so will resolve that lint issue without having to do a full cleaning. Save the full cleaning for after firing.

That, or, as I said, a quick wipedown with TP rather than reading the stall walls works well too...

My PM9, which gets a lot of pocket carry, doesn't seem to attract too much lint in it's holster. Unlike the P238, which is single action and provides more open areas when carried cocked and locked, the DA only, striker-fired Kahr doesn't have any exposed parts in the rear, so no problems with lint, crud, etc. I clean after a range session, though if I only fired a couple mags I may delay some, and about once a month otherwise.

Normally my Glocks get a daily glance and whenever I shoot them. If they get exposed to something, like rain, I'll wipe them down. Twice a year they get completely stripped and a couple of coats of Turtle car wax applied to the exterior surfaces. Glocks don't require a lot of lube and have few openings that allow debris into the action. The Tennifer finish is about as corrosion resistant as anything I've ever seen including stainless steel. That's why I carry them.
