Looking for a good book on the 1873 Win

Post by the telegraphist »

Gday all, looking for a good book on the 1873 Winchester, all models and some of the variants with dates of changeover for the various models. Anyone know of such a publication, or if one exists? including the different styles of factory sights that may have been fitted.

telegraphist,
g'day to you as well. One of the most definitive books on the 1873 was written by George W.Stone in 1973. Sadly it is out of print but an internet search would possibly turn up a copy. From the introduction....."THis book covers the technical, mechanical and historical aspects of the gun."

John, I searched for the the Stone book on abebooks and it didn't even turn up there - very unusual - I have found so many out-of-print books listed there. That one is going to be difficult to find.

OK, found 2 on Amazon for $150/

bulldog,
Having purchased an original '73 in 1999, I bought my copy of this book in 2000. As I recall, the purhase price at that time was around $70.00. $150....ouch!

Thank you,

Dixie has a copy of Stone's The Winchester 1873 Handbook for $60. My state library has a copy, so I'll just borrow that for a few weeks.

Hobie has it right - I have many books from North Cape - publisher of that one - good outfit and books are detailed beyond any others I have.

https://www.northcapepubs.com/

I've found in the past buying some books from that publisher got me better prices. On one occasion when I was looking for one of Kuhnhausen's 1911 books, I was advised by one of the two big book sellers it was "out of print" but available for about five times the new price - they did apologize when I notified them. I bought from the North cape publishers ($22.95).
