Who here has played with one? Thoughts or opinions?

Personally, I see no advantages over the 270.

There is one or two 6.5x280 getting popular over here. One guy was recounting some amazing distance shots on red deer up Scotland.

I understand that with a blown out shoulder it can pip alot of standard cases in that area by quite a bit if that sort of thing floats your boat.

I had a 6.5x55 a whiles back and was really impressed. Left me with a soft spot for 6.5 mm rifles and there bullets. IIRC the groove diameter is closer to 7mm than 6.5.

Thanks guys!

I've got an 03A3 action destined for a sporter build (it was already d&t when I got it). I ran across someone asking about the 6.5-06 in a 1917 Eddystone so I did some reading. It sounded like it fit between the .25-06 and .270 but didn't really do anything better than either and the other two are available off the shelf. But I needed to scratch that wildcat itch and ask those who'd used it before.

Mr Ackley didn't seem to push it in Vol I of his handbook and thought the AI version was bordering on being overbored. Cartridges of the World 11th Ed only has the AI listed and Chuck Hawks website didn't seem to show a definite preference for it over the .25-06 or .270 either.

I built one on a CZ-VZ 24 Mauser. Only complaint I have is the mag was to short for Honady A-max 140 grainers. every thing else fit. With 100 gr Noslers it makes a fine varmint rifle.
I did loose two deer w/ it, I switched to the old style Hornady 140 soft nose and made the longest DRT shot I ever made on a young doe. The Shilen barrel does like the 140 Hornady though. It shoots the 125 Patition pretty good.
I use IMR 4350 to milk all the velocity out of a 25" barrel, had to shorten the breech end of a 6.5-55 barrel so the chamber would clean up, the 6.5-55 case head is larger.
The easiest way to make brass is just size 25-06, trim the mouth and load. 270 and 280 have to have quite a bit trimmed off, but will work just fine.
It would prob'ly shoot better in a wood stock, am going to have to pillar bed the action in the low end Bell and Carlson stock, just one of those money saving choices I regret.

Hope this helps, Abilene
