1949 win 94 w/ pics

Post by sven556 »

I recently purchased this rifle, it's my first leveraction. The past couple of years I've borrowed one from my cousin and I decided it was finally time to get my own.

I've never handled any other firearm that felt so natural! The first time I fired one was deer hunting (I know bad ethics, I should have sighted it in myself and practiced) my cousin said it was sighted in at 100 yds. Killed a nice deer at about 70 yds with the first shot. Somehow I've never forgot to cock the hammer before firing.

Anyway, here are a couple pics of this fine rifle.

Sorry for the photo quality, I really need to learn how to take decent pictures.

As you can see this one has an altered front sight and a decent amount of surface rust on the exterior (didn't find any rust at all on the inside) The wood is not highly figured but there is some figure in the forend. There are a few dings in the wood and metal that are not apparent in the pics, but nothing major. The interior is in good condition and the bore is in good shape. What would you have paid for a rifle in this condition?

Also, Does the flat-band make it more or less desirable?

Very nice, I always wonder about the stories such a rifle could tell.

sven556,

All of those "blemishes" are believeable, honest-use markings. I'll let the rust slide, this time. :D

What you got is a "flat band" variation. Some find that particular front barrel band to be special. Very nice.

May you use that rifle, the way it was intended to be used, for many years to come!

Very good. I agree, honest wear and use. What stories it could tell?

A flat-band to boot.

old 94

Post by brucew44guns »

Quite a few years ago I went to a gun show in Albany, Oregon. It was late Sunday afternoon, when prices are sometimes more flexible. I found an old 94 Win, had a price of 140.00 on it. I picked it up and looked. It was slick from carrying it hunting for years, hardly any blue left. It was fairly dirty and grimy, but the bore was good, wood decent, and no rusting or pits. The guy blurted out "I"ll take 105.00 for it". I said "SOLD". I cleaned it up real good, oiled it, and to this day I have a special appreciation for that gun. Loaned it to my ministers son a couple years ago, very responsible kid, and he killed a nice 3 point buck with it. Old guns sometimes mean more that a new one, that's for sure. Bruce

Pete, you wouldn't take out the rust and have it reblued?

Beautiful rifle! My aunt has one that was made the same year. I never thought to check if it was a flat band or not. I'll have to check this summer.

Good looking carbine sven556.
I think all that I would do is make sure the rust is dead and carefully clean it up a bit. Then use the heck out of it.

Very nice carbine. I agree with some of the other guys when they say to make sure the rust is good and dead and then oil it. Don't try to reblue it or have it blued because that rifle is purdy like she is. My dad has one the same year, also a flatband, that he won't let me shoot. Sometimes he will let me clean the dust from it every once in a while.

Does that carbine have a slightly fatter handguard?

There's just something special about those flat bands. Iv'e got two. I picked up the .32 special last year, and the 30-30 two weeks ago.

Nope. I'd kill the rust with Naval Jelly, clean & oil 'er - then enjoy every bit of what that gun has to say to me !

Gotta go with Pete on this. Kill the rust, clean it, and use it. If you refinish it, it'll only be another alsoran gun.
